Can We Depend on U.S.A To Defend Singapore for the Next 50yr

Hi there , people im starting a discussion whether U.S.A
which is a current superpower will be overshadowed by China in the next 50 years , so when U.S.A become the 2nd most powerful superpower..
I would like to address these points :
1. Can U.S.A still have the capability to protect us ?
2. Will be still be buying USA planes by then?
3. Will China be our main ally by then and become our main trading partner
Note that for the FY 2003 , USA is our 2nd largest trading partner
with 14.5 % , meanwhile China is 6.5% .
4. Do you all think U.S.A which traditionally "protect" us will continue to do so
or do you think China will become our main ally by then and "protect us"

And what are the reasons they have to protect us? I have already said, no country does things without due consideration for ITS OWN INTERESTS. America cannot be expected to do any otherwise. Whatever reason we can give, its nowhere near enuff for them to actually fight alongside us. Did you see them fighting for Israel, even though Israel is among their closest allies? We are not even on their 'Ally' list. So I think we Singaporeans should stop flattering ourselves by thinking they will fight for us. All that can reasonably be expected is the continueing of arms supplies and aid. As for buying US equipment, that's not going to change in the forseeable future. Their eqipment is still the best around. Only thing is they dont release software codes, making any home-made upgrades on the avionics very hard. -
if we can depend on others to defend us, den there won't be national service today...

1. US Has Troops here as u can see in the JI video in 2001,
they were targeting US Navy troops here
2. They have repair facilities at CNB
3. Alot of US Interests in SG..for eg..Pfizer , US company hq etc..
4. SG port is used as a transition point for carriers to go through unlike
M'sia ports..
Anyway im thinking of a kuwait style defense for sg , from U.S
But kuwait style defense too late ler bah..need to wait for UN resolution etc..
that time come already...Iraq already burned most of the oil fields and looted the $$ -
50 years later singapore armed forces also damn high tech already?

USA just have to protect Singapore, but it doesn't mean that we rely on them.
Singapore has been a partner against terror
Singapore ports is a vital trade rt (100% of oil to Japan, trade to Asia).
They have bussinesses here
Singapore can be a base for their transit in SEA
Singapore has been their carrier transit stop for maintenance
After all, there are 101 of reasons.... -
And non of them is vital enough for them to pick up arms to defend us as they did for Kuwait.
Do you really think that those reasons are enough for them to shed blood over? Picking up arms to defend us would require that they go to a state of WAR with whoever is invading us... And how are they ever going to account to their public for wanting to go to war? How is their President, assuming he is willing to help us fight (which is as I said, not likely), going to convince the congress(or issit senate, I forgot) to declare war on our adversary? He has to have their permission to declare war. I tell you, even if he can get it approved, by the time they get it done, war also over liao

You never read abt US politics, they will defend those countries that are allies or dangered by dictators that they deem evil.
USA NEVER take ANY chances on things that disrupt their trade and business to their allies as well like for Japan, 100% of oil passes through here. That's why they still have nuclear bombers such as B-1 though there is near to peace in the world

Sigh, that's the problem with people when assssing the US. You cannot think of inter-state relations the way one evaluates inter-personal relationships. Sure they'll make a huge ruckus, but go to war for you? I am pro-America too, but dont let it get in the way of logical thinking... If you insist that the US will go to war for Singapore, then let me ask you, did they go to war with the Arab world when Israel was almost annihilated dering the Yom Kippur War? this topic is a joke arghz....it's we, our own SAF forces who defend our land man...and dunno why got this mentality on the us forces as the force who defend us...
