Its OFFICIAL: SAF CHANGING WEAPON FROM STYER SSG TO L96A1

This is official from the Army Open House 2004,the School of Infantry Weapons have declared that the Austrian-made Styer SSG Sniper rifle will be phased out and replaced with the newer British-made Accuracy International PM L96A1 Sniper Rifle.
The L96A1 is being touted as one of the best sniper rifles in the world and has a 12X optical scope and uses new construction materials.But the weight of the both weapons tilt in the favour of the Styer SSG as is weighs approx. 5Kg while the L96A1 tips the scale at approx. 8Kg.
It has been confirmed that all trainees undergoing sniper training will be trained with the L96A1. -
well....no one makes the spares for the old Steyrs liao lar.....or at least, very little countries are using it now, in favour of the newer types....so basically it's just a move which is already planned...lol

Well,actually I see the change from the Styer SSG to the Accuracy International PM Sniping rifle is due to the fact that the Malaysians have recently bought over the Austrian Styer firm.And as such,we may feel the need to break away from relying on them.As such,we have the need to change a standard isue sniping weapon.

Yeah, the Steyr is increasingly obsolete, it's not totally due to Malaysia taking over production.It's just that Accuracy International has a better sniper rifle. -

hmmmm.....SPF has been using AI sniper rifles years ago....but then, we don't need that much quantity though, its gonna cost a bomb for SAF....u can practically point-and-shoot with AI in here, it doesn't 'drop' alot compared to SSG...

I hate to bust all the excited bubble but as long as its not officially reported in the news or in the latest PIONEER mag, the replacement for the SAF sniper rifle system is still not confirmed.
As for the use of the L96A1, its been in the sniper armoury for quite sometime. There are also a few other sniper rifle models that SAF have for evaluation, last heard was that they were considering on semi-atuo sniper system for the 3G snipers.
If its because M'sia now has the rights to developing Styer's weapon resulting in S'pore not getting further Styer weapon then why get L96A1 when the the M'sian armed forces sniper also uses it?
SAF/ MINDEF is all about cost & effectiveness, they want cheap but damn-super good stuff which usually doesn't go that way offen. BTW, SAR-21 has its own sniper rifle version, extended heavy barrel & chamber for 7.62, semi-auto.
Anyway, its not that te L96 sniper rifles are not going to be part of the armoury but it would most likely to be a new model. However, it would be best to wait & see. -

Anyway,another reason for the change is that it can easily handle a distance of 1Km, while the Styer SSG will max out at 0.8Km.But if the reason for the change is due to range,then perhaps SAF should consider the McMillan M88.50 calibre or Barret Light .50 calibre sniping rifle,both can reach out all the way to 1.5Km away. -

800m is enough liao, 1.1-1.2km max for L96, outside dat range its best not to shoot unless really required. the longer the distance, the more prone for errors caused by wind and such cos it will take over 1 second for the bullet from a L96 to hit a target 1.2 km away. anyway, the magazine for L96 is said to be rather lousy....different people different view. but 1 thing for sure, its definitely too marked up in price for its performance. not worth so much except maybe for its looks and external design.

i dun think our snipers will be particularly enthu abt humping a 10-12kg Barrett around... the Barrett Lite isn't much better than L96 past 1km, and it's 2kg heavier. less ammo as well... Seems the new rifle has twice the telescopic power of the SSG69.
Talk about SAR-21 sniper variant......extremely unsuitable for field snipers due to various factors:
1) Auto chambering of rounds can damage projectiles and lead to inconsistent flight.
2) Semi-auto bolt movement adds statistical inaccuracy during fire.
3) Gas diverted for chambering adds to inaccuracy during fire.
3) Automatic ejection of rounds may give away position.
4) No need for multiple continous fire due to nature of deployment and mission. Less maintenance. Sniper rifles are less prone to carbon fouling.
One may argue that the best semi-auto rifle in the world, PSG1, is non less accurate than the general bolt action rifles. One may want to think twice when your target is 800m away and you need an upper body shot to confirm a kill.
Weird facts: The SSG69 sniper rifle stock scope has radioactive gas inside. There was a recorded case of company level sore eyes with zero sniper casualty. There were 9 snipers. -

30 round magazines maybe be standard for 7.62x39 ammo, but definitely not for 7.62x51 weapons. A very common misconception of the .50 calibre rifles are that they are sniper rifles - they are not. we define sniper rifles to be able to hit a target over a long distance like 500m with lesser or equal to 1 moa with a cold barrel. i find people who can use the M82A1 very power, can carry something a weight of a law rube and run around, then aim slowly at a target your bare eyes can barly made out, and handle a recoil a few times sionger then a M16, one question, is it true that 0.50cal weapon can penertrate old APC like the M113?

With a .50 AP round, sure, no problem. Think about an Olfa cutter going through popiah skin. It all depends on the type of ammunition which is used.And from which angle, bearing in mind that all armoured vehicles(IFVs,APCs,MBTs,Light Tanks etc.) all have their vulnerable spot.So it depends where the round lands.And if the vehicle has add-on armour like reactive armour and so on.
If the round is depleted uranium armour piercing high-explosive,I have no dubts it would be able to penetrate and cause death and destruction. -
