MINISTER FOR DEFENCE'S COMMENTS DURING HIS VISIT TO THE PEACE VANGUARD DETACHMENThttp://www.mindef.gov.sg/display.asp?number=2079
Question: Minister, what is your impression of the Peace Vanguard Detachment?
Minister: Well, I am very impressed with the capability that the detachment has built up in 2 ½ years. They have achieved operational capability after a very challenging operational build-up certification with the US Army. They spent 5 ½ months in Texas doing the certification. This is the type of certification that every US Army Apache Unit goes through. So, I am glad to see that they have come through successfully and declared operationally ready.
Question: So, when will the Apache Longbow helicopters be brought back to Singapore?
Minister: We hope to bring them back by 2006.
Question: You have been talking about transformation in the SAF. So how will the Apache Longbow helicopters fit into the vision of a 3G-SAF?
Minister: The Apache Longbow moves us along the path toward transformation. That means information dominance, precision weapons and also network-centric warfare. The Apache Longbow has a radar, it has got guided missiles and it has also got data link between the helicopters. This means that it can outsee, out-manoeuvre, outshoot enemy tanks. So you donÂ’t really need a tank to fight a tank anymore. You can fight it asymmetrically with a helicopter.
