Anyway,anyone have any idea what other weapon/s does the sniper arm himself with when out on a mission?As a bolt-action or a specialised semi-auto sniping rifle is both to long and heavy for upclose work.
A sniper is more then just being train to shoot to kill, he is train in the skill of observation, tracking , art of concealment and movement , a lot more things.
Usually in oversea, the sniper will be carrying a pistol, which they will spend time practising shooting also, this is because this is their close range protection weapon. -

Afterall, 93 kills is not the top score for a sniper.
I read that a Finnish sniper called Simo Häyhä killed about 505. I beleive no one has managed to top that.
Add to that the VC once sent a large group of snipers, including their best specifically to take him down? They vowed to kill carlos, or die trying.
Also credited with being the father of modern USMC snipers?

He could have a more standard weapon, LAW, or maybe even a backup rifle. -

Well, i saw a documentary on the USMC sniper course.
And during the final field ex, the sniper had an M40, while the spotter had an M4/M203 combination.

Ask yourself, what mercy can you expect from the aggressor?
You hunt them as if they were animals.
So what fate can be in store for you?
Nothing good.
I recommend you "Sniper" by Adrain Gilbert.
It speaks how snipers in general did not like to wear identifying insignia.
Why? So that if they were captured, they could deny.
In fact, the special badge given by the Wehrmatcht to snipers was rarely worn. -
If an Infantry company gets ambushed by an MG post, after going for cover, they aren't going to be just shitting on the spot. They should respond with 40mm fired in the general direction of the MG, follow by a law rocket along with the support fire from the rest of the company. And while this is going on the sniper & spotter can move to an area where they can have a better view of where everyone is before scoping for the MG gunner.
BTW, today the role of the spotter in U.S military is usually shared by the 2 men sniper team. This is to reduce the stress to the designated sniper. However, only military snipers should practice this habit. Police sniper should never share a single sniper rifle.
In U.S, the 'spotter' has a free range of arsenal that he can chose to carry as long as he is comfactable with it during his mission. Most U.S army sniper/spotter prefer to carry a M14, M16 & M16/203. U.S Force Recon sniper/spotter would usually either carry M4 with scope & silencer( optional ), M4/203, H&K MP5SD, etc.
Ooh! Just for everyones info, .50cal sniper rifle is being widely during the start of the Iraq conflict. And its sure as hell was used for anti-material. Marines prefer to deploy 2 .50cal sniper gunners & 1 7.62mm gunner as shooter/spotter. -
seen 2 much movies liao. a true sniper would get hurt unless the enemy had artillery fixed on his position who in the right mind wants to kill himself unless you are Vietcong or some loony Nazi, forward . snipers kill key enemy personnel an would not try to decimate a platoon unless he wants and MG fired on his general direction. most likely he would kill the commander, the signaller and render his signal set unusable or he would be in a reconaissance role and use his signal set to sent info. i heard Commando snipers have a longer stay duration in ops than infantry/guards snipers. The best weapon against a sniper, is of course, another sniper.
Unless you wish to use aircraft, and carpet bomb the area.
A tactical nuclear weapon would do the trick too.
I refer you to the Battle of Stalingrad.
If you have watched Enemy At The Gates, you will have seen the sniper vs sniper story.
To cut the story short, the Germans were aware of Vasili Zaitsev through Soviet propaganda. In a bid to eliminate this morale problem, they sent the CI of the Zossen Sniper school, Major Konings to hunt him.
The Major did kill a number of snipers which Vasili had trained, and thus a battle began. To cut the story even shorter, the Major got shot in the head. Bang.
Who in the right mind wants to kill himself?
That is a easy question. If you know the enemy is someone fanatical who shows no mercy to captured soldiers, what more a sniper. If you fall into their hands, you will suffer a fate worse than death.
The German Scharfschutzen Badge, coming in 3 grades:
1st: 20 kills
2nd:40
3rd:60
came into service in late 1944. Few were awarded. Even fewer were carried into combat, for to be captured with such a badge was to tell the enemy you had killed so-and-so a number. And it would invite certain and fatal retribution. -

There was a plan to have a dedicated sniper platoon there. ALL field snipers can expect a mission to last from anywhere between 2-7 days. FYI, while its not common to hear, snipers usually work in a 4 man team. Deployment depends on what the situation is like, eg, 2 men can be shooter, 1 man spotter & 1 man for security. Or 1 shooter, 1 spotter, 2 security. etc.

FYI, the U.S Marines are currently testing out a new material for uniforms that is claimed to be able to defeat heat detectors. The principle of it is like the stealth fighters, meaning that it does not really make the wearer disappear or invincible but rather distort the heat signature of the wearer.
Not sure if the material has been tested for sniper duties yet.
