Hopefully the SAR magazines can fit into the SBO better. When "active", my batch was still using the ancient version where we could stuff 3-4 M16 mags (of 30 rounds) into each of the 2 front pouches. We switched over to the presently-utilized webbing upon entering reservist, except no one really figured out how to pack the said mags into it (beyond using the back pouch).
Granted, we rarely carried a full combat load, but that also led to franctic stuffing of magazines inside the #4 uniform whenever we do the run-down during range-shooting! -

M16 mag can fit SAW but not SAR 21, cos SAR 21 does not have the 'catch' for the M16 magazines...and of course not the weapons like aug and famas... -

speaking about magazines, I wonder why high capacity magazines aren't popular in SAF.
there are C-mags (100 rounds) that are supposed to be issued to SAW gunners but I haven't seen any used in live /blank firings. -

SAR21 look better than M16 that for sure.

Yes the SAR21 does fit M-16 magazines which is known in NATO speak as the STANMAG.However,this applies only to the export version of the SAR-21.But what for you want the SAR-21 to use M-16 MAGs?The mags these days are made of polymer and is transparent and even has markings indicating how many round you have left and so on.Its lighter and not as fragile.
Regarding the fact the C-Mags or drum mags holding 100 rounds are seldom to never used in the SAF is due to a very simple reason.The magazine is prone to jamming as the tension of the springs are really great and that it is difficult to reload it once all rounds are expended.The fact that the rounds require tools to enable reloading does not make any comabt and tactical sense out in the field. Hope this answers your queries. (**Note that SAF does use drum mags for the Ultimax 100 LMG) -
BTW it was reported that the SAR-21 has a lighter recoil; think about this. if you were to fire the exact same round as the M-16, why would the recoil be any less? Especially when the SAR-21 uses the same rotating bolt system that effectively seals up the round inside the chamber, and upon firing makes sure that the cartridge stays in the chamber long enough until the gas activates the rotation and unlocks the bolt, by the time which the round has probably left the barrel and full recoil has been absorbed by the firer?
My guess: The SAR-21 is heavier than an S1. Simple physics, conservation of momentum. Which probably explains why a carl gustav was reported to be easier to fire than an SSG.

This pic shows the SAR-21 with an M16 mag. Someone said only the "export" version takes M16 mags. Can anyone clarify this?
I am horrified at the suggestion that the SAR-21 cannot take M16 mags. All 5.56 rifles all over the world are built to the NATO STANAG standards when it comes to magazines. Theoretically, this means that weapons like the British SA-80, HKG36, Beretta AR70 etc etc all can take the same magazines as the one that fits the M16.
Why would I still want M16 mags when you have the fancy plastic ones?
Logistics.
Nearly all our reservist units - more than half of SAF combat strength - are still using M16. So you can imagine the problem if the SAR-21 and M16 mags are incompatible.
On the other side of the coin, can M-16 take the SAR-21 plastic mags? -

So far I have not seen SAR-21 fitted with a suppressor yet.But what I can say is that the earlier posting that the SAR-21 will accept M-16 MAGs only in the Export Version.And future considerations are made to ensure that they can be fitted with the current proprietry magazines.This is quoted in the Guns and Weapons fo Law Enforcement Magazine in January 2001 Pg.77.
And please note that the US and other countries which have formerly adopted the Metal STANMAG are shfthing to the new polymer see-through mag.And I have seen them being used in the FAMAS,M4,M-16,G36,H&K53,Styer Aug and many other weapons. -
Even if the current SAR-21 cant fit the suppressor, it is within our capability to modify the tip of the barrel to fit one. However there is no need for SAR-21 to be silenced except for the shorten P-rail version for SF troops.

5.56mm is a Nato standard round, period. But that does not include the magazine housing the rounds.
As far as why the export version of the SAR21 can used the M16's mag? I would like to refer to the similarities of the U.S Bradly ARMOURED FIGHTING VEHICLES. Despite the word armoured in the name, the 1980s U.S version were mostly made up of light skin armour as compared to the export version to the IDF which had modifications to the vehicle. So whats the point here?
The point is simple, as long as the manufactural is making weapons technology for its host country, its making a lost in profits. Therefore, to make up for the profits, attract buyers & to make a stand in the arms market, manufacturals would always modify the designs of the weapon to suit their intended buyers.
Silencer for the weapon is not really a must since it also reduces the max effective distance of the weapon. However, in like of todays battle ground in urban warfare, having a silencer ensures the firer's hearing is not affected in combat, like disorientation, unable to hear in-coming communications, etc.

Bah, it's time to upgrade to another standard of magazines... frankly the old magazine is starting to show it's age and my experience with these mags have been somewhat fustrating.
