Mystery Singapore 'gun factory' sent 600-kg cache
By Alvin Chiang
[email protected]FIVE crates of guns weighing 600 kg were seized by Finnish customs on a flight to Singapore.
All because the guns did not come with the proper paperwork.
Ms Sanna Sadevirta, an information officer with Finland's Ministry of the Interior, told The New Paper the crates came from a 'gun factory' in Singapore.
The crates contained automatic rifles and mortars.
The seizure took place in February.
It all started when the weapons were sent from Singapore to Morocco for a gun exhibition.
It was not known when the weapons reached Morocco.
The weapons were to be sent back to Singapore on a Finnair flight that left Amsterdam, reported the Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat.
But at a stopover in Helsinki, Finland's capital, customs officials seized the weapons on the passenger plane after they found the 'delivery did not comply with customs procedures'.
No import or export licences for the weapons were found at that time, reported Reuters.
It was not known how the weapons got to Amsterdam from Morocco.
It was reported the guns originated from a gun factory in Singapore.
SENDER, RECIPIENT UNDISCLOSED
Apparently, the weapons have since been returned to the unidentified factory by Finnish customs.
Finnish officials are considering whether or not to press charges against the unidentified cargo subscriber, Helsingin Sanomat said.
The Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said it can neither confirm nor deny if the shipment of arms is back here.
Its spokesman Lee Boon Hwee said such information is confidential.
The sender and the recipient of the shipment were not disclosed by Finnish customs and media.
Chye Whatt Seng , a licensed arms and ammunition dealer, told The New Paper it did not know of any gun exhibition in Morocco.
The company referred us to Chartered Industries which makes ordnance for the Singapore Armed Forces.
But Chartered Industries could not be reached for comment at press time.
