How long does a marksman/sniper take to aim and squeeze off?

Ok guys,heard from this SISPEC instructor that a marksman/sniper takes approximately 3 seconds to aim at the target and 1 second to squeeze off.Thus during IFC,fire movement,we are trained to move from cover to cover and each time we run it must not be longer then 3 secs.Can anyone elaborate on this?Thanks...all info are welcome

if there's heavier weapon like gpmg around, u think fire/movement got use meh? -
ha, depends on if the target is moving or not. fire the shot is one thing, whether it hits is another, whether it hits the spot dat u aim at is another. i think u better concentrate on ur studies, getting a Master in firearms and shooting won't earn u a job. even if u wanna sign on SAF or wat also must have certain level of qualification...Originally posted by thoreldan:this is just an estimation la...

Specops87, think in your instructor may have install in to you all the wrong concept. Yes their motive is good, as to give the enemy less time to shoot at you, but it is sort of too predictable. You should varys the sec based on the ground and situation and not blindly follow 3 sec rule. If not night fall already lah !
Actual in shooting, a lot is base on prediction, like guessing the person next move. For example a soldier run behind a rock, to move to another cover, he have to get up and run again, just predict his move, and aim at the place which he will surface, and shoot him. In some sense it is sort of ambush type of shooting. -

West Point do take in foreign officer trainees. The SAF has quite a few graduated West Pointers.

That won't work if you're fighting against an apache helicopter. I'm sure you've seen that video before. Seriously speaking, other than telling us the time of exposure of snap targets, there is no special requirement on the time taken to engage a target and fire off.
A hasty shot is never a good shot. Let's say that you are going to engage a moving target. What I do is to suck it in, watch the target move, plant my crosshairs ahead of the target, then constrict my air passage, slowly leaking out my breathe, and when the target reaches a known distance from my sights, do a quick snatch, all the while maintaining the "leak" even after the shot has been fired. That's due to a need to follow through. You can't do that with an M-16 though, the trigger pressure is too high, you risk missing from a snatch, but you can do that with an SSG due to its very light trigger weight and supported prone position.
Special care need to be taken for trigger modification also. For stationary targets, smooth trigger action is suitable. For snap targets, consider a double pressure. -
It is shooter who make his shots count = hit what he wants to hit, that is more important. It is riduclous to blind follow 1 shot 1 kill theory.
If you sometime go blindly with the one-shot-one kill, you let the enemy time to think and observe, it is sometime more dangerous with a cool thinking enemy who may get you first.
It sometime, need to take a few well aim shots , or even hasty shots which intension is not to injury or kill, but to fight or confuse or piss the enemy into taking action which expose them to your shots. -
Hmm! If you were being engaged by a sniper, likely hood is that you'll be dead before you start your 3 sec run.
Let's say it your friend that bites the 1st sniper shot, your 1st reaction should be to find cover & start spraying bullets into every possible sniper direction. And then consider getting the hell out of there. Engaging a Sniper is waitting for "Death from afar". Snipers don't usually hang around after 1 shot. 
As for how a sniper pulls his shots, there are many factors but its usually when he is comfortable with the knowledge of the outcome when he pulls the trigger. -
erm do you think that the SAF way of hunting a sniper is abit funny?when a sniper shoots at you,do you guys have the time to count the time from when the bullet hits to the time when u hear the bang?

Yes. It's called the "crack and thump". The human sensory memory mechanism consists of this component called echoic memory(sonic). Echoic memory retains information for 7-8 seconds before it is being forgotten, compared to the human iconic memory (sight and vision) which lasts for only half to 1 sec. Unless actively excercised and recalled the moment it becomes registered, it will be virtually permanently lost within 10 sec. The echoic memory store retains whatever your brain registers while your central processing is busy with other stuff ie. running for cover, and is recalled and processed after that. Yes, you can count the seconds. But usually that is the business of the sniper, not normal infantry. no RPG and NVG cannot fight apache,unless your rambo ^^, 1 bullet heng heng hit the cockpit tiok pilot head shot..
Aniwae..AH-64D longbow der cockpit glass is bullet proof =D
1 more thing the AH-64D 30 mm cannon is used about 2km away..
so ur machine gun max effective range is out.. BOO HOO!
The only way to destroy Apache is through air to air..or patriot missiles..
The 30 mm gun is not really that accurate as well..
but it's effective against lightly armoured vehicles.. -

The most famous one is the apache "shot down by a farmer with an AK-47". I doubt its true...probably a technical problem that caused them to made an emergency landing and somehow got caught. The flight of around 30 apaches were shot up pretty badly but I dun think any crash, I may be wrong though. Many were grounded due to the damage. Its actually a tatical error by the commanders for sending them in without any air support and far from any friendly forces.
