The US Army/ Marines actually bought the technology and used it to train their troops.
i think that we should clarify that these were probably RAM's [real action marker].
They probably fit best inbetween the world of arisoft and paintball:
they are replicas [currently only M4, MP5 and Glock variants], and their similarity with paintball is that they fire small paintball rounds [the casing is optional but is reusable as long as not deformed] and are powered by CO2 [in the case of the M4, its hidden in the stock buffer tube].
Where they stop being like paintball is that they are replicas, fire non-standard small rounds, and are select fire [some countries do not allow select-fire/full-auto paintball markers]. Hence they are usually not allowed on paintball fields.
In fact they have their own playing terms outside of paintball, but games resemble airsoft more because of the technology and the fact that real gear/accessories can fit them [just like in airsoft].
These can be rechambered, and the power is adjustable, which means that yes, they are sold for training purposes around the world, in higher power format, and with different calibers - a popular one is 11mm rubber rounds.. [very painful!]
so they are not remodelled airsoft guns, although they are manufactured by the same companies that produce airsoft guns [yick fung/classic army], and are made full metal [aside from parts which are poly/plastic in the real weapon].
and they are not simmunition [also known as FX rounds] weapons, as these are usually real weapons which are modified/rechambered to fire specific simmunition rounds.
They dont fit in RAM bodies.

in 2 words "don't bother"
yeah, thats why i didnt bother when i was last there. no point. waste of time.
this is why i like airsoft.. much better all round - the community is also ultra senstive, so anyone potentially damaging the sport is usually kicked out.
