Nothing. Although their jump wings are worn with a red backing. And of course their beret colour. Go ask ard the older bunch who were ard when the Gds Fmn was set up, the catchline was "overtrained infantry and underpaid commandos with a crisis identity!" Give the Gds the beret and tab and tell them they are superman, see who kenna con and joins up! *lol* All in jest of course, each unit has their own purpose and areas of ops.

I liken the NDU to UK's SBS (Special Boat Squadron). Very low profile. Some have never heard of them. But when push comes to shove, they deliver. I have this military magazine somewhere which describes the relations between SAS & SBS. Saying that SAS are the glory boys. They get all the fame & honour & glory, but when it comes to delivering, they screw up time & time again. SBS however gets the job done but maintain low profile.
Kinda reminds me of NDU. Low profile but when they need to deliver, they do. -

Guards are just infantry with nicer toys. Take away their LSVs/heli-drops, and guards = infantry. They do the exact same stuff on the ground. IMO you can't really compare Guards and Cdo as their job scope is different. It's like comparing infantry and armor to see who's better.
And yeah i agree with esesce on the point abt the SBS. Mention that to most Singaporeans and they'll tell you it's a stupid bus company. -
SAS will sometimes disobey the Queen's order (happened once or twice b4) due to their overwhelming pride. SBS is more on low profile.....sometimes SBS and SAS work together but SAS will take all the glory.

General recognition of a commando is basically their wings and underwear on their heads
(jk, jk, dun hunt for me). Not all Cdos have to go thru RG school and there are non-Cdo RGs, so its not a distinguishing feature.
But then again, how much symbols you need? Pride is one thing but they dun garauntee you come home alive.

Interesting point to note, SBS guys are drawn only from the ranks of the Royal Marines wherelse SAS take their guys from all over the armed forces. Also, if one fails the SBS course, he is still SAS qualified. Gives you an idea of which is more elite. -

- The training they go through (Guardsman have to pass their Guards Conversion course and Commandos have to pass BCT and BAC....) this made them more specialised compared to conventional Infantryman.
- Scope of operation (Infantry are the main fighting backbone of the army, they engage the enemies directly in battle, Like Infantry, only that Guardsman are trained at a higher level to enable them to be more vesatille, they could be inserted at any point of time during battle using helis, on the other hand, Commandos are rather differnet, they are usually inserted using airborne to conduct sabotage/ Recce missions on the enemies instead of engaging large scale enemies directly.)
- Degree of self-sufficiency (Every commando have to be trained to be proficient with at least one skill, medic, demolitions, sniper, boatman etc... this allow them to be self sufficent and survive on their on during missions, this makes them different from Infantryman and Guardsman) -

In the past, Guards do not have a distinctive beret but wear the Infantry green beret. They were also under HQ Infantry. To differentiate them from normal infantry (SIR) and to distinct their status as elite infantry, they are given a "Guards" tab to be worn on their shoulder. Also in the past, Guards have a slightly higher "entry" requirement like PES A only, min education level and eye-sight.... In the past, hardly see any specs in a Guards unit. But now with more and more enlistees being myopic and more people with A levels and diploma, all these have changed.
When Guards are seperated into a seperate formation under HQ Guards. They have a new and distinct khaki brown beret with backing behind the crest. However they retained the "Guards" Tab.
The role of guards have evolved over the years, they used to be infantry which are supposedly fitter and more able compared to SIR units. Also have a rappelling role with more flexible heli-insert options.
But now more like RDF and "Marines" type role with specialist in heli and seabourne insertions. Also they have more mobile and powerful weapons like the LSV.
The Commando all along distincguished by their red beret. When in No. 1, No. 3 or smart 4 can see red beret. In SBO/FBO you should be able to distinguish them by their airborne wings and dagger. -
If my memory doesn't fail me, guardsmen used to have a "backing" behind the SAF crest on their berets (same green colour as infantry). Also, in the old Tamasek green uniform days, they wore a different colour belt to differentiate themselves. There were no shoulder guards tabs then.
Guardsmen used to perform Istana guard duties as well, like the British counterparts. Now role taken over by MPs. -

as for commando....not so sure....i m a guard,not a commando.but i heard from from friends that commando is very tough,if not tougher then guard.and commando like to jump from sky....very fun.

Maybe i was rite. coz da 1st time i saw at AOH 2004, there r 3 malay guards. dis guyz sure damn tough before they got through Guards Course.

Wah, amcam baik je eh. hahaha. I like their combat arr but dun think i hav a chance man. me 2.4 a bit sux, even worse cross country. Da rest napfa, ok2 jek. tapi kalau mcm obstacle, fav dok. challenging gitu. nah, c ma condition how in future.
