  Guardsmen used to perform Istana guard duties as well, like the British counterparts. Now role taken over by MPs.

  The "backing" or crest on berets are used by members of the 7th SIB. They are still in use today, including by non-Guards vocation members.
  
  I have also used the old red stable belts with my smart No.4 uniform many, many years ago, in an internal parade.

  Yes, there are Malays in Guards units, as well as representation from all the other ethnic groups in Singapore. Some of my good friends are Malays - completing our NS and ICTs together after all these years.

  Obviously they'll keep back the better recruits. But, as someone recently pointed out, you'll need to pass your FFI before you could attend the Guards Conversion Course.
