In Israeli Military Forums, even though Hebrew is a main language,Their command of english seems much more capable then Chinese-speaking Singaporeans ..

My fellow Singaporeans, Gempur Wira's member's (a malaysian military forum), has been visiting here for some time.
I wish to state that a large number of the topics here do not reflect well on the professionalism of the SAF because a lot of them exhibit poor grammar and spelling in the topic titles themselves.
What does it matter if the Singapore Armed Forces are the cream of the armed forces crop in South-east Asia?
The command of english in this sub-forum should be improved, since, to wit, english is our first language, our standards should already be there, and a cut above the rest of the region.
Anyway, being an avid "Military Nuts" reader, i have also noticed that SAF spokespersons, on the occasions that they address the press or the public at any event demonstrate a weak command of english. This is plainly evident to a trained ear.
Examples:
I have been visiting Israeli Military Forums for a long time, before i began to post in Singapore Military Forums.
In those forums, even though Hebrew is their main language, their command of english is demonstrably higher than chinese-speaking Singaporeans.

If you observe, the amount of intimate behaviour and public imbibing of alcohol/tobacco is demonstrably higher among the higher echelons of the SAF.
Paradoxically, such behaviour is extant among the new recruits, but not to the point where it is very noticeable.
I have personally observed, Warrant Officers of the SAF and commisioned officers blatantly smoking in public eating places, and holding the hands of their paramours as they please, without any regard for the eyes of the public.
Whereas the recruit is much affrightened of the Military Police, and dares not do such things so openly. If they do it, they do it clandestinely.
Why is this so?
It is because the higher echelons possess rank and power.
Rank has it privileges, as any who have come through the SAF can attest. -

To be able to speak and write in good English is important as this allows better communication and lower possibility of misunderstanding between people regardless if it is leisure or at work.
Of course, it doesn't have to go to the extent of using the Queen's English but at least be at a (simple and proper) level that enables others (including non-native English speaking people from other countries) to be able to understand. The percieved notion that majority of the Singaporeans can speak proper English (just that they preferred to converse in Singlish) is obsolete. We should not continue to kid ourselves that Singlish speakers are equally proficient in English. If one who doesn't converse nor write in proper English often, eventually he/she will lose his/her language proficiency.
A true to life incident which I encountered while in UK. My friend was chit chatting (more likely a one-sided machine gun rattle) with an English man while on the train. For the whole session, I noticed that he just nodded his head and smiled. As soon as my friend excused himself to the washroom, he turned to me and said ,"Your friend is a nice chap. Pity that I could not really understand his English, otherwise I would have enjoyed this conversation very much. By the way, where are you people from?"
This incident clearly shows that speaking good English is essential in conversing with people from overseas if we want to make the other party understand what we are trying to say. Perhaps we should learn from the Dutch, while Dutch being their mother tongue is spoken all over Netherlands, they are equally at ease with English (not even the slightest hint of the language being broken/modified). Same goes to the rest of Europeans, while some of them might speak in a heavily accented English, at least I find that they are easier to understand then some of our local Singlish speakers.
