Start small. Just talk to somepeople sitting around you first. Ask about their holidays, how they spent christmas and new year ( a bit cliche but better than nothing) but do pay attention to what they say no matter how boring it is. It's rude to start a conversation and doze off! Haha...who knows, you mght hear rumours of a certain guy/gal in class?!?!

I can't really ask you to be yourself, cause i don't know your character...
But all i can say is, be natural, try not to worry, and start light conversations with everyone around you if you can. The weather's been cold, how did you spend your holidays, etc.
Introduce yourself, ask them what's the latest movie they caught, and so much more. Just try it keep it light on the first day.
Don't worry, and be confident, you can do it.
