some advice needed on getting married...

dun worry, itz not another BGR prob... i post my prob here as this issue is causing quite a worry for me...
me thinking of getting married, but as u pple should already know, the cost of buying a hm, throwing wedding banquet, renov, and buying appliance all adds up to a hefty amt...
this is my plan... i m hoping to set aside 30k for a 20-25 table banquet, 30k for renov, 15k for appliance...
the main prob comes when i have to apply for a loan for the house... i figured i may have to end up borrowing at least 200k (aft paying the downpayment) over a period of 15-30yrs... i have calculated that each month, i may have to fork out ard 2k for the house... this may still be manageable if both my spouse n i are working.. but say if she is to stay hm, n i jiak lak liao...
so i hope forumites who had juz got married, or in planning phase like me could share some exp so that i can have a better idea of how much to spend on wedding... esp the part on borrowing and how long u all choose to repay it...

i dunno about others actually but then for me i thought that the lavish dinner for some people whom i havent seen for years is quite redundant and at the end of the day i am heavily in debts. not that the dinner should be axed but it can be of a smaller scale? afterall, it's a marriage between u and her right?
ok just how i feel; no offence really. cos my colleague also getting married and she's also telling me about the costs and ho much she and her husband gotta fork out and stuff... -

actually i m not too worried abt the wedding costs, as i think i should still be able to manage it... the prob lies with the housing loan... i m not sure if itz a norm for newly-weds in their mid 20s these days have to borrow huge loans and to repay the loan for more than 20 yrs...
so i m kinda worried as my own calculations may not have covered sufficient grounds... -
For your housing loan, I would advise against taking loans from banks. Just take it up from HDB is a better bet. The reason being, at the end of the day, if you can't repay the housing loan, HDB won't mortaged your flat away (they just wait patiently for you to clear up your debts), unlike banks which they do.

Hmm why not just live simply?
We got a 3 room HDB flat. After downpayment, every month we pay about $200+++ each from CPF cos we took the longest lease plan. Before we paid the downpayment, we put aside an amount of money in our CPF for rainy days (in case lose job, watever) so that for at least 1-2 years, if ONE of us lose our job, can 'tahan' a bit for some time. THink up to now I feel its the best decision we made. We don't NEED a fancy house but we need the mobility. Kids won't come till a few years later, a smaller house means less housework.
Phase out your appliance buying and renovation. Buy ONLY the most impt ones first make sure a few months in between each phases. And no matter how much you KNOW you want that plasma television, don't buy it until you are COMFORTABLE.
I don't see the point of starting life together desperately in debt. You should be spending time with each other, not slaving your life away trying to 'build' the perfect and ideal lifestyle. -

i tot most people will recover a large part of their $$ from the wedding dinners thru the angpaos??
... unless you hold it at Ritz Carlton, then dun say lah.
make sure you confirm the majority's attendance b4 the dinner.
IMHO, if not enuff money, then dun buy such a big house (or get the newer flats in some ulu estates). U and ur wife's income may be enough for now... but wat if a baby comes along? then u might need a car oso? Additional expenses that will eat up into savings (or watever that's left of it), or add to more debts.
Got a fren who oso bought a 3-rm flat in marsiling.. got it for way less than 200k (can't rem how much).. did his own reno. Not much furniture. went for his house warming have to sit on the floor.
But whatever it is and however it looks, they are still proud to call it their home!

Anyway you can consider having a buffet reception at your home. My cousin did that. Then with the cash saved you can have the state of the art home with a private wedding function -
do it the minimalis zen way.

I suppose a simple wedding function cos not only is it expensive, the time and enegry needed can be better spend on some quality time with your wife alone. Have a simple buffet function and go for a longer and better honeymoon.

I do away with my wedding dinner too. Held a buffet at my place instead.
Cheap & good... what's important, I can use the extra cash on other areas.

if budget is a problem, then why not think in reverse?
now u are thinking wat u need and then get the result how much it will cost, and come to conclusion that it will bring a big burden of debts that last for very long time.
why not think in how much debts u are able to take, and get the result of how much money u can spare with that reduce debts, and the get the conclsion of what type of wedding dinner,what standard of renov and how big the flat u buy?

...i got roughly wat u guys are referring to... but there are a few considerations where i have to really take into acct...
the wedding banquet is a necessity... i believe it pleases both our parents... the thing is that i do not expect to recover all the money i throw into the banquet... so i guess i have to make some plans for it, n its not too big of a prob yet... i will take a look at the sg brides link that one friendly forumite has posted earlier...
i hope i dun have to spend a lot for reno and furniture... i try looking ard, and even then i think the bare necessities need ard 10k... i know reno can try to cut down, but better to plan for more than less... a bit kiasi, hahaha...
the most urgent thing that is perhaps bothering me is the housing loan that i mentioned earlier... i do know that 3-room flats are more affordable, n perhaps more practical for pple like me who r juz starting out, but the thing is that i m thinking of shifting out later in my life and m afraid that it may be difficult to sell in the market...
will be thinking of the 4-room flats tentatively... like another forumite had said, itz better to borow directly from HDB... but correct me if i m wrong... suppose i borrow a loan of 200k, at interest of 2.5%/annum... juz using simple interest and say i choose to return the amt in 20 yrs... that means i would have accumulated 100k of interest over these 20 yrs tio boh, n need to pay HDB a total of abt 300k?
can anyone more experience pple verify this? tks in advance..
