actually the best place to study is still your house, no matter where else there's bound to be distractions...and i dont think its that helpful to travel to somewhere (nearby or far away) to study bcos of the travelling time etc..maybe u can try to make some adjustments to ur hse like see what is distracting u and see if its possible to make any changes? just my 2cents..

my fren's mom invite some fengshui master come see the house
the master say the best place to study is in the toilet
the mom relli build bookshelf and a small table in the toilet and chase my fren and her bro to the toilet to study every nite -
changi airport is a great place to study... but its getting really popular. try a community centre..the reading rooms are very good, especially tiong bahru

I'd suggest studying at home or at the study room of a community centre.
Used to do both, the latter for the simple reason that my flat didn't have air-conditoning. Given the cost of running an aircon (now that I have my own flat with aircon), it's really hard to argue that the fee paid to the CC is 'bo hua'. The fee's probably less than what many pay a month for mobile phone usage.
The advantage of being at home is that you don't have to worry about your stuff being stolen. If you need to look for something on the Internet, the computer is there. If you want food and drink, it's there too.
Unless your family is dysfunctional or your home has become a mahjong den, most of the time the distractions are within the limits of your control. I believe it boils down to motivation and how badly you want to do well.
The other thing that you can work on is study technique. Long hours do not equate to effectiveness.

Absolutely. Look at the Indian and PRC students who come here and do so well. Many don't have the material comforts that the typical Singaporean student enjoy but are still able to overcome this and do better.Originally posted by RaTtY81:survival of the fittest? -

If you do go overseas and study, you'll find yourself studying more than you ever will in Singapore.

I'd disagree, judging from the number of young PRC people I see around the shopping mall these days. Perhaps younger Singaporeans in general (not to imply that the above is such) can attempt to be a little less dismissive of competition from such motivated foreign students before its too late. We working folks are already feeling the heat at the work place.
As for the part about studying overseas, I can't say that it had been borne out by my own experience reading for a masters degree in a boring English town though. But I did enjoy spending the long hours talking to my classmates on many different things, especially when my Jewish American classmate debated with the Muslim Pakistani one on the Palestinian issue.
