Yeah, actually it's quite common. I know of people whom ALMOST ONLY step in to woo girls, when she broke up with his bf. And if she is attached, they will hang around like a leech, until they broke off and dive in like a vulture. An irritating thingy is that these causal friends of mine ALWAYS claim 'chi qing', talk about fate and all sort of rubbish. Interestingly, they almost always pick girls with problematic relationship with their bf. I am not including the fact that they give the-people-involved an aura that he is a good person. When they see through the 'real him' - every single one broke off with him.
I seen enough repetition of his style that I got so disgusted.
To me, personally, it depends on situation, on how it ended, the cause, source and outcome.
MC: Sometimes, this is the only time some people could have a chance at their long awaited crush. You see, not everyone see the perfect picture and rarely does the perfect scenario of chasing someone appear. Some people only have that ONE chance at it and if they miss it, it is gone.
More like secure it first, anything else, talk later.

There are too many who self acclaimed faithfulness onto the long awaited crush. And i've seen my friends who after so long got what they've wanted and let go of it easily.
There is seldom a perfect scenario, but there could be calculated timing and responses.
Not forgetting there are different reasons for doing that, from crush - ego challenge.
However, if a brought-over relationship is a success. Then why not go for it?
Some takes one shot.
Some takes many shots over a period of their lifetime.
Some got it.
Some didn't.

It's good to know that the cases you've seen are fine.
Then i wonder what is happening to relationship management these days.

generally speaking, gals will feel lonely after breaking off. during these period of times, they will look for a companion to have a shoulder to lean on, just look at some of the lonely souls here to seek for short-term partners you will know already.
as for guys who opt for sucker kills, my thinking is that there is not right or wrong as a guy who take liking for the gal, how cruel will it be if he reject the gals' demand?
