frm my pt of view, i think 'like' can be long term too.(eg. liking for cousins, a fren)
i dun restrict myself within the area of BGR kinda 'like' (which can be otherwise known as a crush or something like tt)
but i do agree tt love is the kind where u feel tt each other's prescence is impt, regardless who or wat kinda person he/she is.(eg. a real jerk, flirt)

Love: U would b very anxious and show extreme concern for him/her, u wish to see him/her everyday and wish tt he/she b by your side forever...
Like: U enjoy his/her company, like to talk to him/her, but you won't miss him/her when she/he is nt around, he/she can also share your troubles, although loved ones also can. However there r some things u can't talk to your loved ones but to those u liked...

I guess sumtimes even if u noe e person well, it may not mean tt e r/s may end up well n vice versa. At e end of e day, its still trial and error kinda thing.
At e starting point, it is difficult 2 differentiate whether u like or love the person. Only until the later part of the r/s will you realise. But by then, u might have been confused, whether its love or juz getting used to his/her presence.
when u love sum1, u are willing 2 gif up everything, unconditionally, juz 4 the person. Even if U lose him/her at the End oF the Day, u'll not regret coz they found happiness

To ur 1st qn, which might have arised becoz u somewat left it out when reading, *kaiLi* has answered it.
anyway, ur idea tt pple nowadays are somewat into complex thinking might be too much of a sweeping statement. i dun think every1 is like tt it depends on different individuals.
As for ur Qn of how long will the love last, it is based on alot of factors and no one can predict coz nothing is certain.
