confused about the law

for some reason I just can't understand, our gahmen says no downloading of copyrighted stuff from the internet, including musics and movie
but what about using file sharing programn to get stuff? I mean...that isn't downloading what, just file sharing. What about downloading really old stuff we aren't sure if it is copyrighted such as movies from 1900s and music composed by mozart or something? I mean...these people aren't earning the money anymore isn't it? What about downloading theme songs from movie and TV drama? You can't really buy them from the market can you?
If file sharing is illegal too...that will means sending of files at MSN is also illegal?
Haiz...almost everything in singapore is illegal...the gahmens can't really expect us to buy the whole $30 album just for one piece of song right? Such a 'fine' country... -
Downloading is a broad definition, and I believe it includes file sharing... Such is law I think, the more general the meaning, the better it is so as to minimize loopholes. Downloading is sort of like you transfer data (or perhaps other stuff) from any computer/tv/etc to your machine/eletronics/etc...
If the law is too specific, say no fighting, I would give my enemy a punch of the face and say I'm just exercising my knuckles and my enemy happened to get in the way, then I did not breach the law as I wasn't fighting. But normally the law would instead put terms like no violence, so even if I made a threatening gesture, that should be enough to be classified as violence... haha... *gently walks away* -
Don't bother yourself with such questions... If you think closely enough.. There're tons of laws in Singapore which is enough to kick you in the butt, anytime and anywhere. And if you think that's not enough... They can make new law ALMOST anytime they want... It's just a matter of whether they want to EXERCISE THINGS... I expect things to be more 'obvious' as they grab more 'power'..
Sometimes it's funny how they can find all sorts of EXCUSES and take AGES for some things, while other things they want done can be accomplished in such little time without much verification at all..
ANYWAY... I'm sorry I've posted all these.. Just me and my itchy hands I guess?

take smoking for example, it is legal, right? but if you add illegal drugs to your ciggy, it becomes illegal. the punishment is not on the smoking but the drugs that you chose to smoke. same concept. file sharing is legal, but the files that you choose to send or receive is not.
old movies may or may not be copyrighted. but for music, it is still illegal if you download a song ripped from a commercial cd even though its ancient. the copyright for this case is not the original song but the song that you took it out from the compilation cd. but its impossible to track. it may be digitally remastered for all you know. -

you can download music legally after 70 yrs since the work is created.

And file sharing by Msn is actually illegal too , only very hard to catch. The only legal use for p2p programs is when the creators of the thing u wish to share specifically give the permission to share it , whether implied or in writing. -

Depends on what files you sharing/downloading... P2P is allowed, to share personal files/non-copyrighted materials
