any undergrads here care to shed some light?
Hi there, based on your above criteria, I would recommend SMU. I am from SMU but am doing marketing. Here's why I think so.
SMU is actually more like a finance university. It has strengths in Finance and has alot of tie-ups with finance institutions/fund management houses. We have alot of internship tie-ups and coorperations with all these diff finance institutions. Which make the rest of us non-finance students to wonder whether should we just change the name to Singapore Finance University.
If u want a dynamic and non exam-focused place, if you want to improve your public speaking skills, if you want to improve your way of thinking and flexibility. I would recommend SMU. We have certain strengths over the other universities and of coz have weaknesses. Employers have commented that when they put a business student from SMU, NUS, NTU together. They can see n notice which student is from which uni. It's obvious.
FYI, in the working world... it's not about how much one knows in hard-core knowledge but in how well u can communicate with others.. the EQ, the relationships management etc. SMU focuses on that although I being a lao jiao already, can see that the new batches of students are getting nerdier, which is bad.
With regards to the Accounting comment, All accountants earn 2k as basic salary. Prospects seem good in accounting because there's always hiring. Truth is, Accounting is a numbers controlled game (the no. of pple studying of acct course is controlled to ensure supply fits demand), also... in the early years as a junior auditor/accountant... it's really a mathematical monkey job to see how long you can tahan. Most pple give up n move to other professions. So it's like a process of survival of the 'tahan-nest'. Those who can stay on are promoted and slowly move up to Partner level. Pay is no doubt good eventually but it's a job that u either HATE it or LOVE it. no in-betw
Good luck
