A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to
visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into
complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee,
the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of
coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal,
some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to
help themselves to the coffee.
When all his former students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor
said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken
up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for
you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your
problems and stress. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the
cup, but you consciously went for the best cups and were eyeing each
other's cups. Now consider this: Life is the coffee, and the jobs,
money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold
and contain Life, and do not change the quality of Life. Sometimes, by
concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has
provided."
So, don't let the cups drive you... enjoy the coffee instead. -

I feel that the type of cup you use can increase the amount of satisfaction you derive from the coffee.

but you would feel different drinking coffee from a chinese tea cup and a coffee mug no?
at least maybe the chinese tea cup coffee would remind you of tea since it has absorbed all the tea flavor already -

it depends on wat u want.. to enjoy the luxury or enjoy good coffee. -

maybe that person likes the smell in your cup -
i dun agree with the story leh... it isnt a very accurate comparison between life-jobs and coffee-cups. i mean, if u have a better paying job (for example), you tend to have a "better" life (or at least, life chances). the cups analogy doesnt work here leh....

just like living in a little flat is much the same as living in a bigass mansion to me...

Starbucks is not really selling coffee, which explains why they are doing so well. -

The analogy seemed overly simplified. The cup might not affect the quality of the coffee, but how could the kind of jobs u have not affect the quality of ur lives?
Many people aren't even aiming to climb up to the top of their career ladder but are already stressed up in their work since they will still need to perform well to hold on to their ricebowl.
Are they able to not feel stressed up in their job and say things like "Aiyah, it's only a ricebowl, break then break lor. There's more to life than 3 meals a day, and my family can starve too" ?
Probably the professor got one of the more relaxed job among those in the story, that's why he could say it so easily.
