100% agree with the bear for physics part. if u going into engin field, physics and maths is a must. If not u will going to struggle in uni. Even if u going to chemical engin, it is pretty different from the chemistry u study in sec or jc. I will say that chemical engin is something like chemical manufacturing. maybe u can surf nus or ntu for their chemical engin course for more infor.Originally posted by OasisBlue:May i ask for more details on chemical engineering? not sure what it is despite searching it on wiki...thx![]()
Physics is like another A Maths, memorise formulas and stuff. Bio i heard there is a lot of memorising work too. So at the end of the day, both of these subjects require lots of memorising.Originally posted by OasisBlue:thx for everyone's suggestion...i wanna take bio n physics...but it seems dat its not a gd combination... anyone knows why?![]()
there is no link between bio and physics. it will affect the kind of courses and subjects you can take in the future. and it might be harder to study because none of the topics in bio and physics overlap each other.Originally posted by OasisBlue:thx for everyone's suggestion...i wanna take bio n physics...but it seems dat its not a gd combination... anyone knows why?![]()

Chemistry is easy to achieve good results if you spend some effort on it. There is a little memorising but the best part is that most of the chapters are more or less interlinked so its easier to piece them up in the end. Physics topics are all segregated, so you may find it hard whenever you start on a new topic.
WELL SAID. Too many singaporean youths have the misconception that "memorising formulae" is the way to go.Originally posted by the Bear:i never understood why people insist on "memorising formulae for things especially math and physics...
you understand why it is done the way it is done, everything falls into place and you will know what tool is needed... it is not memory work..
physics requires no memory work.. neither does math... at least that's how i was taught...
which means until today, i can remember why in trigonometry, in calculus, in vectors, in complex numbers are used... and sometimes to get to the answer or to the destination, you can use a whole lot of different routes...
like you want to solve a 2-dimensional vector puzzle, you can use complex numbers, and in the calculation of the complex numbers, you can use matrices.. because they are different methods of seeing the same problem...
anyway, i've not been doing school math for ages.. in my time, we were actually given the formulae for almost everything... and it wasn't used much... and the problems required you to take it apart more than brute calculation...
have things changed for the worse?
i dun memorise lol i practise... but theory part...u just have to read more to keep them in mindOriginally posted by clementius:WELL SAID. Too many singaporean youths have the misconception that "memorising formulae" is the way to go.
But certain field of applied maths like advanced statistics really left me no choice but to "brute force" thru it. Many of the proofs require remembering of what to manipulate and is impossible to deduce. (after all, great men took years to come out with them!)
i was told by friends that physics is easier den bio and chemistry is one u have to memorize tons of formulas lol...so which is true?Originally posted by Darkness_hacker99:Chem is a MUST in this 21st century. Without Chem, I dont think you can survive. As for the another one, I suggest you take on bio. Biology is generally ALOT easier than physic because you just apply what you've learn in daily life. If you like to memorize TONNES of formulas, physic is for you.
thx alot! =) i like bio but like any other students, i worry for the exams... heard its super tough sigh... but nvrtheless i will try my bestOriginally posted by jaydunkfull:I would say that physics is the easiest to score because all you have to do is to understand the concept and how the formulas are applied. actually even the formulas make sense so as long as you understand how it works there is actually no need to resort to memorising
biology is a lot of memorising but of cos there should be selective regurgitation in essay questions and structured questions. i think theres more work to be done on biology than physics due to the memorising, there are more terms to memorise in biology
personally, i feel that physics is more interesting than biology. at this stage, since youre only in secondary two, i would advise you to take the subjects you are interested in. because you may say that you want to venture into the engineering field now but youre only fourteen and you might change your mind about your career prospects as time goes. you should go with what you are interested in because ultimately it is your interest that will determine where you will end up.
good luck! i would suggest taking up triple sciences because it would allow you more choices in terms of courses in the future. if you have to choose, go with what you want and what you will be interested in. physics and bio dont seem like a bad choice. if youre interested, you will do well in whatever courses you choose to take![]()
bear dont worryOriginally posted by missqi:LOL.
bear ah.
i think he in sec sch.
and F math is no longer available in jc.![]()
Just make sense in whatever you study.. No such things as die hard memorising stuffs.. You're bound to forget it one day and then have to read it all over again.. If you can't cope.. I think some schools allow students to drop to combined science with one pure science..Originally posted by OasisBlue:thx alot! =) i like bio but like any other students, i worry for the exams... heard its super tough sigh... but nvrtheless i will try my best![]()
