Life after O's.

well. i've just completed my O's. currently waiting for results. im not sure if my results will be any good anyway.
and i've been gifted with the ability to draw very well, paint. art and design and such. [or so my friends say]
and these old people around. you know how they go, "oh, art has no future", blah blah. my cousins are all studying overseas. making a name for themselves. and here i am.
what im confused about is. if my results permit me to. which course should i take in poly?
im interested in Game Design, Media Design and all those similar ones. but im not entirely sure which one i'd like to take up.
my parents and friends have told me to go for what i'd love to do/want to do. but im still stuck at this crossroad. -

Are you interested in programming? If no, game design is out. You can still take Multimedia though... it's simpler than game designing...

Then it's good. Go to the respective polys to read about what the courses are all about.
Open Houses are coming soon if I'm not wrong... go there, play and ask some questions. It helps a lot. -

Hmm one thing to add on,allthough it good to study and eventually get a job that u enjoy,but also take note of the career prospects that particular job has
You may think that you like that course but who knows what happened when you study,hence it also important to find out in details on the course you want.
For example,when i finish my Os,as i Love maths very much and have the impression that accountancy was something like maths,when i took up the course in sp last time,i realised it was not true,there are alot of other things to study as well. -
same thing for me.
however i went all the way and now i am taking art for my a'levels. whether it is good or bad its too late ahha -
i think alot of us are going to be stuck with a job that is not within our field of interest. only very few can enjoy their job.

yeah. i feel the same way
i have interests in journalism and wanna take mass comm (very ambitious)
but my parents tell me, taking mass comm, is a very wide field. and its not easy to get a job with it.
my dad works in advertising, and my mum used to.
so they kind of know about this mass comm thing
i wanna pursue passion
but my parents suggested, choose something..that can get u a job. cos when i hve a family. food on the table is a priority

In fact, if you are good, you are a HOT property man... these days, the market demands better designs, better graphical communications, our consumers reacts to designs...
If I had a chance to choose again, I will go back to design work...
There's alot of work satisfaction, to see your work coming to life... to hear comments (good and bad) about your work... to know your concept works...

Game Designing is not an easy path; you have to deal with complicated and irritating algorithms to sort out information and process game data, troublesome DirectX OpenGL functionality to do the graphics, networking if you're doing MMOs, and how to optimise performance and coordination of the game server and the game client.
That's a game programmer. A game designer just needs to design the game, and slave the programmers. But Singapore? Hard to feed yourself.
I'm also waiting for my Os, and I've done some simple MMOs using VB and c++. And it's honestly a pain in the ass to make.
Though, the satisfaction of seeing a playable version of your game beats all the hard work.

No one mention about Fashion and Textile Design.
Most wants to go into the 'hottest' course. Motion, Game, Visual Com...
Ultimately, go to open house and see what you really want. -

Ultimately... you can make money doing anything... as long as you are good enough at it.
If you want to do game design, become one of the best, and you'll always be hired.
The world outside actually looks more at competence than qualifications.
I have friends who start in one degree, but then end up working in entirely different jobs.
So as a mental test of job suitability, try this: Close your eyes and imagine... what would it feel like to do the kind of work you're aspiring to do, day after day.
See it vividly as if you are there, and really get the feeling for it.... THEN imagine yourself doing that job for another 5 to 10 years...
The question Now is... do you still feel the passion for it?
If the answer is YES, then this might be the right work for you.
It's best if you can make money doing what you love. Even if you start out earning less at first... because in the end, it's your PASSION that will push you to excel and drive your income through the roof.
