At first, you should allow him to keep in touch with friends.... If you allowed him to have or keep in touch with his friends at first, maybe there will not have any miscommunications between you and your boyfriend..

Even as your boyfriend, you should allow him to have his own space and circle of friends...
Getting to know his friends and type of friends he has also allows you to understand him better...
It's wrong of him to lie to you but, maybe been restrictive to him may backfire or had backfired as he could now feel repulsive...
Let him know your rationale behind the no-friend issue and let him understand that he can also have his own space.... -
