Three men arrested for supplying contraband cigarettes

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean and two Indian nationals have been arrested for supplying contraband cigarettes to peddlers.
A total of 18,590 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes worth about S$167,500 were seized on 28th November.
The duty and GST payable totalled S$139,240.
Customs officers found a total of 2,990 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes in an apartment unit at Geylang Lorong 4 and 110 packets in its false ceiling.
Another 15,490 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized from a truck in Toa Payoh
The Singaporean was charged in Court on 29th November for customs offences.
The two Indian nationals were found to be immigration offenders and were therefore handed over to the police for follow-up action.

Firstly, TS isnt caught buying contraband ciggies.
Secondly, TS isnt caught with posessions of ciggies.
The one police will find is the suppliers.. and the runners... not the buyers...unless caught in the act.
Get TS to pursue this matter to see who is right, shall we ?

Secondly, the fine is too little for someone to be caught.
Tats y we are helping him by giving him sound advice. not just scare him without helping him.
Must wait till he clarify us with further info then can tell him wads next. but u talk like he is guilty.
Though i still dun think police will chase the buyers. If like tat, will police chase those who buy food from illegal hawkers? or illegal vcds?? or imitation products?? -

Wow, I've never had imagined that my post could have garnered a lot of interest, and I would like to thank everyone (particularly mhcampboy) for hearing me out.
Let me just share on how I felt when I got that phone call from his brother.
Obviously no one can imagine how scared I was when his brother called me to say that he was caught with the cigarrettes. One of the first things that his brother told me was, "someone has to be responsible". He even said that he wants to go over to my place to talk to my parents over what has happened. Of course I did not want my parents to know about all this; I'm an adult and I feel that I can handle the situation, and that was the reason why I agreed to meet his parents that night to sort things out.
It was out of fear and the feeling of guilt+taking resposibility that I agreed to pay part of the fine.
I know I am being stupid for not asking for any proof that he was arrested or fined but seriously with his family around VS myself, I knew I was at the losing end during that time.
Haiz, maybe I'm not matured to handle such situations.
I was really down the next day when his brother called me again to settle the balance. I was damn stupid not to be firm and refuse to pay. What for? I mean, I've already paid the day before out of goodwill and now he's taking advantage to a whole new level and because of the fear again that was in me, I relented.
I was so desperate to get the remaining $50 that I nearly sold my X-Box for a measly $65. Luckily the CD tray was spoilt. Or perhaps someone up there is knocking some sense over my head. So I turned to SGForums and by reading the responses I got, I blamed myself for being naive and submissive. So I'm not surprised that his brother actually took advantage of me.
I met my friend at night and discussed my problem to him. His advice was: if that $50 would settle things once and for all, then go ahead and pay. I had to swallow my pride and borrowed that amount from him. After paying my friend that outstanding debt, he thanked me and said that he would show me the letter from the Police, but since I'm on course and won't be seeing him till next week, I've yet to see the proof.
I know I should have been more firm or perhaps aggresive but what would you do when you are stuck in a sticky situation like mine? Fight all the way till court or just be submissive. Yes, the latter is a silly choice but at least I was never threatened with another phone call anymore and I got myself a good night's sleep after a rather lousy weekend. -

lols, i have seen Indonesian cigarettes around in Singapore. those are the ones without the disgusting picture. next time if you see a cigarette packaging on the ground, just see if you see the disgusting photo. if no, means it indonesia one. all smuggled. anyways its cheaper than singapore one by a lot. marlboro light only $5.50-$6 SGD.

Treat it as helping out someone.
if they have to scare you with issues like fingering you as the culprit and so on. You know they arent meant to be your friends anymore.
Actually, you can even go and make a police report on them for extorting money out of you.

bro i got a feeling that u got cheated or what... i also buy.. and that was once the guy was caught.. and he was bringing in cartons and was only fine 200sgd at custom.. i dunno why that your friend was caught 5k that was impossible..
the rule is if u were caught bringing in they can only fine u 200 to 500max it only apply when u did not decrale and of coz they will tax u if u wan to bring in back to singapore..
so 5k? LOL! easy money to earn from student.. -

TS.....i myself smoked contraband cigs for almost 2 yrs and i went out fine.....and my supplier is a trustworthy person.....so ya this thread title is not applicable to me... but the thing is cigarettes are not trouble is the smoker himself are creating trouble for himself by not finding a really trsutworth really zai(if ya friend's zai how could he get caught in first place?Think abt it) ....i advise u to find a jiang hu experienced person who's sharp to detect predators(aurthorities in this case)....
