It's been years, but it still affects me. I need closure to move on. Suggestions?

Fold your pain away with 1000 cranes.
I'm serious.
It's like, you try to keep convincing yourself by the time you fold the 1000th crane, you'd have gotten over it.
It takes quite a bit of effort, patience and time to fold 1000 cranes.
By the time you hit 1000, hopefully enough time would have passed to close up that gaping hole in your poor, poor heart. -
then move on.

Closures comes in different forms.
From seeing that person happy. From accidental sighting to a planned meeting & discussion.
To finding that person dead.
Closure is about surrendering the hope of something to happen.
Closure is also about doing something, like smiling, laughing, saying sorry and feeling the relief of a burden.
They all involve closure of a issue by the person that started it.

You need the person who tied the bells to your neck to remove the bells.

You meet this person on the street one day.
That person smile and even shake your hands. And you smile and shake back.
You let go of the anger. That is closure. -
Last example:
You and g/f take a picture.
You and g/f breaks.
You burn that picture. That is also a closure. -

Closure is a choice - therefore people stagnant by choice too.
But I don't think there's an effective way on closing one's chapter; usually when you realised there's really nothing else apart from moving on, you will probably move on. You probably have to take charge of your life to expedite your closure.
I reckon it's time to reflect and decide if you still want to imprison yourself in this emotional bondage. You chould share with us your story here, but ultimately, only you can decide if you want to walk out of your misery.

I don't suggest you find your ex to 'discuss' what went wrong or how it could've been different. Sometimes closure can be unspoken also my friend. No need to face to face say one... You might scare him/her if you suddenly send an sms after so many years. -
if closure is not possible (juz like me), then you gotta find an exit yourself.

Usually people need to do something symbolic to tell the mind that its ended and to let go and start a new path.

Do you still keep in touch with her?
For me, the way I "closed" a broken rs is by ceasing contact with the party I was involved with...hence none of my ex-es is my friend now
I am guessing it is better this way, it helps me to move on faster
