Modelling agency

My sister was approached by a modelling agency called New experience, and they asked intially for $1000 for a "professional portfolio" to be done, when my sister remarked that it was too expensive they offered her $500 claiming it to be for the priced charged on infants.
I told my sister not to join, but she wants a reason, apparently my sixth sense aint good enough for her.
I called up the agency to ask if the portfolio can be done elsewhere and produced for their reference, the china women who claim to be part time said she would get her boss to talk to me.
Yesterday, the boss called and i wasn't really pleased with the way he talked, kinda reminds me of typical ...oh nvm.
He claims to have been in the business for 20 years and has been on TV newspapers and interviews, he claims that nothing is free and doing the portfolio is compulsory, he claims that elsewhere the "professional portfolios" would set us back by thousand of dollars.
I told him i would consider first, to let my sister join or not.
Firstly, why did a china women picked up my call? And she cannot answer my questions.
Secondly, the boss has to contact me?
Thirdly, 20 years into the business you do not have a website? I tried searching online for any traces of New Experience, no luck.
Lastly, i suspect this is a SCAW (invert the W)
Any advice people? -

anyways back to T.S problems.. if feels like a scam dun join lo. If she insists , by all means.. dont stop her. Some people just wanna learn things , the HARD WAY.. -
Dozens of such agency out there. I had been approached by them b4 and remember vividly that there was a thread on such encounter some time ago too.
if you ask me, i will say dont waste the money. but if your sister is so persistent and you cant stop her, bring her to some reputable modelling agency. at least even if you dont get any modelling assignment, you get a nice portfolio and some nice pictures. -

Good models are picked and paid to be invited, not paid to join ya. -
Agree the part on study and upgrade and getting a stable job, but that does not guarantee a handsome good man and a good family life. I have some friends in the modelling industry.
They never paid anything. At most, they paid for their own lunch or snacks during castings. -
Well..
being a scam is one thing..... lose some money. you earn it back.
but being taken advantage of during the shoots... it's "innocence" lost.
there are many agencies in Hong Kong, where laws are more liberal..
would call the girl to the studio and sign some legal mambo-jumbo...
then she will be led to an "open" room to change, but people in the room are also females.. and tell her it's ok to change since all the crew are females anyway.
while she is changing, they would take a sneak shot.
when the girl objects, they would come back with the legal mambo jumbo.
next thing she knows is her body will be on the cover ... -

we dont really like to use their ppl...cos they ghot no standard....
my advice is dont join...
the most she will do only a background talent for mediacorp....
if she can really make it...pls go to carrie.
or be a freelance...
if she feel she is up to it. -

I've heard of such agencies conning people in that they will take pictures and do the portfolio for you only. If you are expecting modelling assignments thereafter, you get zilch.

Thanks people, now that my sister saw this, and the mirror.....she has decided not to join. And finish her schooling first.

I understand that if you are doing part-time you might need to pay for your own courses.
