Showing care and concern is definitely not akin to gambling. This cannot be use as an example because I feel that Love is not about gamble and hoping for returns, but giving unconditioned love as the main point.

We as guys don't need to know. Normally when you come to this and ask yourself this question. It signals that your r/s is having some problems.
Don't sugar-coat your mindset of 'being in a relationship'. Every r/s have it's ups and downs, not all are sweet all the way. And most problems stem from the lack of effective communication and a good way for both parties to reach a compromise should hiccups happen along the way.
Lastly compromise != giving in

theres a thin line between giving in at the right time and situations and the difference of giving in all/most of the time
1) If you are handsome, you need not care about the gal becos you got many others.
2) If you are rich, you need not care about the gal becos you got many others.
3) If you are a sweet talker, you need not care about the gal becos you got many others.
The problem now lies if you do not have the above.
You do not have any positive points all you got is negative points.
Try to increase you positive points.
No money earn money lor.
Not a sweet talker learn to be one.
If not handsome learn to sing well..
Try to be more caring and understanding thats the only key difference better you and other guys.
To have a much better say in the relationship the only way is to train yourself to live without the person and make the person listern to you every words , once you have mastered this the other half will have no holds on you and you can finally control the relationship.
