Woo, glad to see pple so interested in music though Jrock aint my cup of tea. Grunge and rock chills my world. Well I am a vox in my band so i pretty know nuts about drums but hanging around and jamming with my drummer, i can offer my 3 cents worth.
Firstly, as someone mentioned, learn your basics. its impt. knowing the theories is one thing, applying them is another.
Second, know what u wan. obviously, for a beginner, if u gonna listen so widely from Blink 182 to some chinese band drummer, u aint gonna get far. Try something that u really like, practice it, loosen ur limbs, once u get the hang of ur limbs moving individually and able to pull thru a song pretty well, only then its time to listen widely and learn other styles.
Thirdly, yeah jam. My band also started jamming and make mistakes, learn, thats why we get a chance to play in public nowadays. we are glad we make mistakes.
Fourthly, passion.self explanatory.
Fifthly, creativity. As a drummer, many noes the theories but how do we differentiate a good drummer and an average one? the creativity. Basically, a drummer who can express what the song wants to express is a good drummer. Creativity doesnt mean playing more but simply to play in a way that will bring out the essence of the song. Example, you can hardly use the style of Jazz to play Rock, it simply does not fit the songs. I believe that a song is a human body. Just like a human body, there are many layers, from the organs, to the bones, to our outer body. A song also needs to be treated the same way. Instruments must build layer by layer. When u play, think how best can you build the body.
Lastly, peserverance. nobody becomes a damn good drummer overnite. practice and if after 10 years u still cant make it, then at least it has been a hobby..:p

By the way Im interested in taking drumming too! But the only thing that holds me back is the enrollment part. Some recomended Yamaha and some not giving reasons that they are not dedicated enough or too expensive... Any one with experience can help to advice me which is the best school?

1) Yamaha - expensive though comprehensive, theories everything, diff styles...can take quite long b4 u actually learn practical stuff.
2) Outside teachers - Even more expensive sometimes...but u get the rigth one with good experience, then its worth it. recommended for pple who knows basics...
3) other smaller schools like emmanuel at bedok (still there?), ur sch band, community centres,
4) go jamming studios check out, some of them may have some of these classes going on. -

Actually me a laymen when comes to appreciate drumming techniques. But Dave drumming sounds great. How U differienate techniques? nope no slayer for me, they are great but not for me. in the past i use to do quite alot of GNR, Skid Row stuff...but in 1992, i discovered Nirvana (so late!) and neber turned back since...nowadays i listen to Creed, some punk acts occassionaly like blink, sum etc....some emo acts are great too, finch, sommerset etc...support local too lah!!
anyway, drum techniques...or shld i say the theories of it all does not matter any more when it comes to a song...to me at least. you can know all the theories in the whole world but when i hear no passion when u play a song, its pointless...and believe me, there are many drummers that has flawless techniques but yet no passion. -
got a crush with drums! had been planning to take up some drumming lessons but im just plain lazy and dont know when to start!!
anyways, try listening to underground punk, punkrock or emo punk bands. the drum beats will tempt you to follow suit.. -
