Jokes aside. I guess it is fair to say that as humans beings, we all desire recognition one way or another. Personally, I do not believe that, in most circumstances at least, one could "silently carry a torch" for a prolonged period of time - be it for a significant other, or for an organisation.
Was your boss biased? Or was it a genuine slip of mind? I dare not make wild guesses. But do continue, excelling in what you do best - and I pray the next dinner, you'd be invited.
You may also wish to talk to him about your discontentment. If indeed, he left you out this time deliberately and show no sign of repentance... Then I can only submit to you that he is not a worthy boss to serve under
