With such a low GPA score, it is impossible to get a place in local university. With that being said, I have decided to try whatever it takes to increase my chance of entering local university, and that might includes taking private 'A' Level exam.
During my poly days, I have zero CCA involvment at all and the course I have in mind for university is totally different from the course I have studied in poly.
I look around various websites/forums regarding "school talks" and it seems that I have to take private university or go for overseas studies. Unfortunately, I don't have the financial ability to do so.
Now all I have left is taking private 'A' level or enrolling in private university. I want to take a shot at private 'A' level before considering for private university.
I will be going to NS in about a month. I thought of self studying the subjects during my free time but whether the circumstances will favour me is still up in the air.
Finally, I hope sgforums member can give some advice.
Not sure if taking private A Levels will help at all. Might be a better idea to start somewhere else lower than your current poly education, get some skills, and get work experience.
Perhaps you can consider taking apprenticeship courses from ITE.
super hard lah...don't want to discourage you...a lot of people has tried and failed.
but if you the guts to try, no one will stop you...good luck
so you gonna study for 2 years of A lvl stuff in NS? wahhh not easy man. in NS esp during ur training phase, once u go back bunk after a day's training at around 8pm? u straight away bath and sleep lor and wake up nxt day 5.30am.
unless u in some slack vocation like RP.i know of a friend who did badly in his A lvls than take private As the next yr,guard duty nothing to do so everyday in camp like study lor. he got to nus after that.
it will be super tough if u're in a combat vocation that always chiong sua. but i always believed anything is possible.so, no harm trying really.
Actually, why don't you consider working then study part-time with SIM or some other private institution ? Clock experience and get your cert at the same time or later when you can afford it. Don't want to put you down but with your GPA, obviously you aren't the cream of the crop and experience might be a better way forward.

What happens if your A levels is crap and you still can't get into Uni? You would have wasted 1-2 years of your time. A level certs ain't useful in finding a job.
Like what Kramnave says, go and try to move forward
private uni got problem meh
Your poly you can even score 2.3, dont even think of A level.
I am not looking down on you dude, but thats the fake. Poly is so easy and you get 2.3.... my friend get around that score too, but they play and play.. relax.. get low marks kpkb.. nv go study..
My advice is, dont try lah... If you mindset think you really can , and really wanna work super hard, go for it.
If you half-bucket water.. Goodluck in wasting money ![]()
why not after ur NS, u go back study poly again. but this time is the course you wanted in uni?
and make sure u really study this time.
Initially I thought that was the course and subsequently the career I want for my life, but it turned out to be a mirage.
As for working part-time, that's another solution i will consider if all else fail. The 'A' level certificate that I am looking at is not used to find a job but it is used for increasing my chance of entering local university. It is well known that local university degree is more valued than private degree. Hence, the shot at the 'A' level certificate.
If I were to take up another course in poly after NS, it will be another 3 years + 3/4 years in university, which will total up to 6/7 years. By the time I am out in the working world, i will be hitting nearly 30 years old. Base on the current and future situation, I am of no value in this society.
I will be spending 2 years in NS and I know it will be tough to study for 'A' Level and fighting it out on the field at the same time. Not only that, the vocation that I get will determine the probablity of me doing self-study. I am graded Pes B, which also doesn't favour my situation at all.
It's a battle against all odds. And the way the world is operating, the survival of the fittest, is definitely not a friend to anyone. It's a fight or die situation. Many are at the mercy of the cold society we are living in, and I definitely don't want to end up as a beggar on the street. I understand my GPA is 2.3 and it's pathetic. However, it's pointless to harp on the past and I have learnt the lessons that had to be learned.
Thank you people of sgforum for the advice. If you have anything to add, feel free to do.
Glad to know you are practical and realistic in your mindset of the world.
Some made it through life with just 'O' level certification. So I see no reason why you can't make it too.
March got NS intake for poly?
Is your GPA 2.3 your final GPA or first 5 sem result?
Anyway what's your current course? and what's your ideal course?
Actually if i were you i would go work and get some experience b4 upgrading education level.

I did a course I have no interest in but it taught me alot especially on how to think out of the box and I got what I wanted after a long hard climb.
Go and take your A levels but don't cry if you get disappointed because it will be a steep mountain you are trying to climb.
I would have prefered if you ask about how to get around things rather than to take a step backwards. There are qualifications beyond a degree which are far more valuable.
You have not stopped even once to ask what you could do with a basic poly diploma. However to your credit, you persisted in showing your hankering for a paper chase.
What happens if the degree becomes a mirage again like your diploma when you hit the real world?
My GPA of 2.3 is for the whole of six semesters. The diploma that I studied for is in the field of IT. The
I am not hankering after a paper chase but the job that I am looking at requires me to have a minimum of degree. If society would look pass the paper qualification, I would rather forsake the 3 years diploma study course or even the chase for the degree certification, and be under the wings of someone who is truly willing to teach, working with him/her and learn from his/her experiences. I am sure that beats 3 years of diploma studies and maybe even 3/4 years of degree certification combined.
As for the degree turning out to be another mirage, time will tell. When I first received my 'O' level result, I chose IT course as the choice of my study. I did learn something throughout the 3 years and it's not totally wasted. Later in the year I have the choice to specialise in one of the different fields, namely(in general), web designing, programming or networking.
I don't have it to cut it out in the designing field so I moved on to programming. Initially, I have no problems with it but when I was attached to some other company to do programming work, I call it quit. The environment of this industry doesn't suit me and I will definitely be unhappy in this field. Finally, for networking, it was a neutral field of study for me, I have no problem with it.
At the end of three years(it might or might not be late), I realised that I definitely don't want to work anywhere in the field of IT, Now I will ask then, what can I do with a IT diploma?

My question to you again: so what if the environment of the chosen degree doesn't fit into what you want? Are you going to do a master to get into another line you think you want?
You have programming skills - it's a skill. No one is asking you to do something you do not like but it sounds like you already gave up before you have even started in the real world. No one can ever expect that work in the real world will be like the simulated world of academia.
What is the discipline you want to get into? Why not investigate what you can do with the degree first before jumping into A levels straight in a hope to get into Uni?
The way I see it and you can tell me if I am wrong : do a basic bachelor degree at SIM with your diploma - most bachelor degrees are nothing really nowadays in the real world, unless they are engineering/nursing/medical degrees but they mean alot when it comes down to applying for further study.
Work hard in it and score well in it. THEN you apply for a master degree at NUS/NTU/SMU in something you want to do. Think about it and see what you think of it.

The problem is that the TS has got a poly diploma...I dont think he can take another poly course again in any of the 5 polys...even if the polys allow...I dont think there will be tuition grant...so course fees per sem can be in 5-digits...
Can forget about going back to poly lar.
I agree with fymk.
You have to first ask yourself what in the world you want to do.
What's wrong with IT anyway? It is a very marketable skill and companies I know are always short of good IT people. Even if you hated it during your Poly days, it shouldn't have been an excuse to slack off.
There are many mirages out there. Often times the job you take up is nowhere near what you thought it would be like. You can't wait to find that perfect job. Worse, no point saying 'just because I don't like it I don't do well'.
You have to make the best of what you have.
either u work and study part time or work for a few yrs, save up and then go further studies.
I also have a diploma in IT like you too, but now I'm working as I have no intention of studying Uni for the time being. Who says IT is all about programming, at least mine is not. This is one of the most common misconceptions that people have in IT and I admit I used to be one of them too.
Make use of your diploma and don't think that it's a waste. If possible, take up some private courses or what.. Nowadays, everyone's taking up Uni because tons of people are doing that now.
some ppl gpa 1.9 can be so happy ![]()
TS can consider working in computer sales. There is money to be made if one is really good.

The TS said that he moved on to programming in school.
Hmm, for me I don't learn only programming in school. ![]()
P.S I hate programming.
