that's, i think what differentiate a poly from A level.... poly guys come in the hard way... struggle.. but will make it thru, most honours are taken by them on graduation... fewer in ratio for A levels....

yet... almost no poly students are in the first class range.... most are either foreign scholars or A level people
Since u went into army and u forgotten most of wat u studied in poly, u shouldnt have skipped year one... you can opt to study in year one to get back the basics first... starting from year 2 is stressful because u might not understand what is being taught (which is happening to you)
It is very important for you to understand, more important then memorizing... remember this.. that is what u need to do. Just what the others have said.. ask your friends or tutors until you know.. send them emails everyday.. or arrange a meet up with the professor.
The marking scheme of uni is indeed different from that of poly. But dont worry.. they will not give you zero unless you really write rubbish.
Dont Stress yourself out now... school term just started and you are already complaining? Relax relax... First year is abit xiong for poly students especially people like you who got direct entry into second year.. treat it as transition period.. try to grasp a feel of how studies in uni can be like and then adapt to it. In the next sem or next year you will be mentally prepared and will definitely feel better.
I was from poly to uni too, and I do admit that I felt like how you felt too initially..
