I just got my result and its Marine engineering. The problem is I am not sure whether Marine engineering would be related to the Navy SAF programme. I need more information about the 2 and I have tried to call the navy hotline but its not working.
If i graduate, would I miss a career of going out to see as a marine engineer as i have to furfill the service that i had to do because of the joint poly-SAF scheme.
I need some help on both aspects as I am confuse whether I should go for the navy SAF scheme
A trip down to central manpower base would help u solve yr problem....
never ever chew on any dangling carrots from mindef, saf, rsaf, rsn... y...?
cos as u can see... 99.9% of guys r wanting to just serve n fuck off for juz 2 years n then ORD loh...
y sign contract on for a minimum of 5 years... juz for the sake of some monthly allowance while in poly for 3 years... and then suffer n regret for the 5 years bond for taking that money...
anyway, if u r that desperate for mindef... go to www.rsn.gov.sg

Thanks for the answer. Hmm.. got one question. so if I dont apply for the scholarship and when its time i serve for my national servie, is there a high chance that i get into the navy cause the navy and my course are kind of related. So i want to get into the navy instead of the army

totally no relation...
rsn and rsaf personnel need to undergo army bmt 1st, then when finished bmt, see the posting order where mindef post u to...
thus, at best u can only request ur platoon officer to see if can post u to navy after the bmt (should if got some navy vocations intake) during one of the few 1-to-1 interviews with him... but no guarantee...
I am still confused. my friends encourage me to go for it as both are related but I am not sure. Any opinions?

and i highly recommend that rather u take the scholarships / sponsorship from commercial companies listed above...
dont ur friend ur friend... anyway... ur friends ORD from NS already? ur friends from navy? be smart n wise...
this dangling carrot looks juicy, fresh, and big... but its sprayed with insecticides n its a genetically-modified carrot... u get the idea....

U got a good point. But the commercial companies scholarship is surely hard to get. Its actually not the monthly money problem as my parents would support me when i am in poly. the problem is that I may want a bond like i could be ensured of a job in the future. I am wishing I could be a marine engineer working on a big ship traveling around the world and visit different country. But i think there aren't any scholarship that can ensure that T_T

those commercial ones oso got bonds...
anyway, just apply those commercial ones will do... u already posted to the marine course, sure got chance to attend the scholarship interviews... got apply, got chance...
dont care abt the navy ones... craps of bullshit....
u wanna serve the civil service, can, only non-uniformed ones...
but should u still decide to sign on navy, then dont regret it...
and u dont get to travel far far on rsn ships... usually very common is just tour around the singapore straits, south china sea... n then dock at tuas / changi...
anyway, a few regulars chit chatted with me during my nsf time, from their mouths all the same..., "knn, y i go signed that contract... now i just want to ORD with you guys... for this 5 years contract, i can ORD 2 or 3 times already... pui..."
Hallo Lwqbulb,
I am currently studying second year Marine Engineering (DMR) in SP. I have also completed my NS. What i can say is dont sign-on with Navy now cause when you come out of the bond you cannot convent to merchant ship class 1,2 licence which qualify you to become chief engineer. This course mainly train you to be seagoing engineer and in order to take the licence you will need to take test and to have enough seagoing time. So open your view now don't just stick to the uniform option.
What i can suggest you is to join the course go ask the lecture for company bonds and stuff. There are a few companys out there is giving out bond to student over there. One good company is NOL.
Feel free to ask me question, will try my best to help fellow coursemate.
Cheers !
Thanks for the suggestion. So if I went for the Navy thing I won't have time to take the license that would enable me to go out to sea as I will be furfilling my bond with the Navy? If thats is so, then I would not want to sign with the Navy.
My main priority is to be able to go out to sea as a marine engineer after I finish my diploma. I am also interested in getting a degree after the dilpoma if I am able to make it to the University. I heard that there are different types of degree that i can go for. Like the Newcastle University in Singapore for example. Would it be wise not to get any bonds including the company bonds as I maybe able to get a degree as an upgrade for a better career,
It seems that you can choose different ways to upgrade yourself from the picture i got from a booklet. Which is the better way?
Hallo Lwqbulb ,
Sorry for late reply ! Yup you can say that , cause the time you spent in Navy most likely cannot contribute to your sea-time. Hence cannot let you to go for class 5 or 1,2 test. So think about it . If you have the cash now to study then don't sign any bond now as it will tie down your option. And just to let you know by having a class 1 license is as good as having a degree. So you can further upgrade yourself next time by have master degree next time when you come back ashore, maybe marine business will be good . Actually the above path all have it's pro and con so take time to think you still got time in your hand !
Cheers !
related, yes. Compulsory, no.
hey dude, some how im in the same league as you just got my results this year and would be attending the course soon. i'll probably be your classmate. lol.
from what i do know is than the SAF navy sponsorship isn't that good as it doesn't confirms a job opportunity in the field than you would want to be. i guess that you would probably be in the base doing some shit. you should try applying for scholarships from the more commercial companies, like me , i've applied for a scholarship via MPA and i think you should too. it requires a 3 year bond with the company . but if you think of it this way, you will be able to get your chief engineer while serving the bond.
well i hope this helps
Thanks for the info. Is it possible to apply for the scholarship now? I check out the MPA website and found out that there are different types of scholarship so could you give me a link to the one may have to go for?. And I didn't do quite well for my L1R4. Its 16 and is it possible to get the scholarship with this result? I heard that only want good o level results..
Thanks alot appreciate it
hey.. why not you give me your msn and i'll tell you more.. i find it harder to do so here.
thanks. :)
No problem. I pm you my msn already :)
