if you like children, volunteer at orphanages. if you like animals, help out at animal shelters such as Animal Lovers League and Noah's Ark and SPCA.
Please do not advise others to help out at orphanages just because they like children. It is the same as those who want to enter teaching just because they like children -- most ended up regretting it.
If you want to help out at children's homes, the most important thing you must have is the ability to endure no matter what the kids do. Otherwise you will be giving other volunteers a big headache by creating problems with the kids.
Why do I know? Because I know of volunteers who ended up shouting at the kids, and one who even ended up beating the child. Some of the kids are by no means angels ( okay, actually it is quite a number of them ), so please do not have the thinking there just because they do not have parents to spoil them they will be better-mannered than the average kid.
And if you want to help out in a non-fund raising manner, there are usually two main ways of helping out:
1) Technical work ( e.g. fixing of things and building new stuffs from recycled or reused items )
2) Teaching the kids
The 2nd one is what that will really make you want to jump up and down at times ( though it also depends on which children's home you visit ). It is no difference from controlling a real class, and if the caretakers are not there to help you out, good luck to you.

Well.. i think when I was younger I shifted alot.. i think i have shifted in singapore only at least 7 times... *before i went aboard*
so it's became a habit that i don't keep in contact with my old friends.
True.. but unfortunately.. colleages will only be colleages..
It's rather not advice-able to develope too close a relationship with my colleages at my level. There are reasons behind why i draw the line....
