Is it right to ostracize someone?

I have a friend in school. He's really anonying and everyone hates him. They started to hate him becoz of a few guys from his old school that told everyone(On the 1st day of school) all the bad things he did in the old school. But personally, i dont think he's that bad NOW, mayb it was just LAST YEAR. So, should i join the rest so as to not get hated by them? Or do the right thing(I guess) and try to make friends with that guy and mayb try to change the way my other classmates see him? Tks for ur help. P.S. Plz no 'Mind your own business' kind of messages...

Be yerself. Dun get involve in school politics. If u feel he is nice, just get to know him better. Wat is wrong wif tat? Ignore all the other people, use yer judgement.

Seriously, why can't you just mind your own business and do what you know to be right?
By wanting to follow the whole crowd, you're just as bad as the rest of them.
You care about your own welfare instead of your friend's welfare.
