  A good talk, theories, explaination will always work for me. Anyway, rejection will bound to hurt in some ways or another, there is no foolproof way of communicating that will avoid entirely.

  it's situational based. you can't juz whack in a line which someone gave you. although you can compose your thoughts around the same meaning and try to bring it across.
  
  it always gets sticky when it's btwn close friends and one who doesn't want to take the relation any further.

  hmmm... very hard leh.. the person whu is being rejected wil surely feel sad one.. how can she be happy?? but time will heals or u can help the other party by finding someone esle?

  I'm not saying you shouldn't be tactful in your words and actions... I mean you can TRY... But if she don't value the friendship as much as you do... It probably ain't gonna stay anyway? 2 main factors you have to consider here (not including your side as you've already stated what you wish for the situation to be...)...
  
  1. The way you handle the situation. (which is what you're considerating now...) Which is also already been told to you. The approach varies from the kinda person you're handling and the situation....
  
  2. The mentality of the person you're handling... Sometimes no matter how you try to save a friendship in view of a rejected 'proposal'.... Some people's mentality are just set as that... Little you can do just through the way you handle the situation would change their mentality much....
