the govt recently announced that more poly students will be able to gain entry into unis and will not be turning any polys into another uni.so,i hope that these will prevent poly students from complaining abt not gaining entry like the poly student who recently wrote in to the straits time forum about poly students not gaining entry as jc students gain automatic entry into unis.where did he get his info from.
to all poly students who complain that the jc system is all about mamorising pls note that it is difficult and students always have to compete with students from rjc and njc who find scoring 4AS in the a-levels no difficult feat and now jc students will have to compete with poly students who take their own sweet time ingetting a dip which can get them a job unlike an a-level ct which is pratically useless.already this year the omission of the sat gave way to more poly students and denied places to a-level students wo could have gained entry....so students from polys pls stop complaining.

I don't care if less JC students go Uni or waste their 2 years studying A levels... I am a Poly student and I want a place in University and I am working hard for it and thats final...

Many poly students are making questions to the government is because only 5% to 10% of poly students make it to local uni.. Which makes up almost 80% to 85% JC students and the rest making it foreign students.. Basing on the percentages comparing poly to JC students, one can easily tell that JC students to go into uni stand a higher chance..
Each tertiary institutions have different levels of "competition". Jcs will def fight with well known JC like RJC etc.. That DOES NOT mean that poly does not have it.. There are many polys coming up and there will definately be competition.. making it almost 10% of students going into uni, don't you think the chances are slimer than JC students?
You cannot use the term USELESS with an A level cert.. If one scores well enough in that cert, with no money to go to a uni or rather, don wish to pursue a uni life YET, one can still go into a work force and their pay is much higher than a student who comes out frm a poly.. It depends on which field of course.. -
well...i dun think that poly grad gets less pay compared to jc grads....but what my main point was do u all think another uni is required though chances are slim that they will evr built anothe one..

why should there be more university built to just accomodate jc students and poly students. We live in a meritocratic system ...it's the survival of the fittest. If a poly student do well in his studies or a jc student do very well in A Level , they deserve to get into university. If you do not make the cut ....then too bad for you. If you think poly is a bed of roses....you gotta be kidding me.
If you have problems competing with RJC or NJC students, why did you even take A levels in the first place when you think you cannot do as well as they can.
If you think A levels is useless ...then why didn't you go to polytechnic and get a 'working' diploma.

well , my dear, a good university has a long built reputation like NTU& NUS. Sure ...You can tell them to build another one - it will be a while before the university will be recognised as an equal to NUS/NTU . You are already whining about NJC and RJC students . These same people will be competing against you academically if you manage to get intoa local university. Are you going to make the excuse that they are smarter if you don't do well?
In the future if you have a degree and you find out that another person holds (let's say) an oxford degree and competing with u for a job. Are you going to whine that it is unfair that the person has the brains and money to go to oxford ? If you had any self respect for your own capabilities, you will be attempting to take the challenge of doing well in your A levels , regardless of which JC you come from.
It's the survival of the fittest in the real world ...so survive as best as you can. -

I totally agree with what fmyk says....
No use complaining that some of the poly students are 'snatching' away the places in the Uni... if only you know how hard we must work to get to that goal... to be the top 5%-10% of all the poly cohort... and if you said 'A' levels are not good enough, why did you do it in the first place... for me, I did think that I could not complete with those RJC people, and thus I go poly... I have a feeling that you are angry that more and more poly students are making it, thus depriving you of a place.... it's the hardworks that counts really...
anyway, I seriously think that the local unis should wake up its ideas... they refused to give exemptions to their own poly students.... and even if they did, they force you to take some stupid tests... as if they cannot trust you..
in other countries, you can always have the exemptions... some even up to 2 years..... so the local unis are actually looking down on us poly students... if only I had the money to go overseas... I would not defintely not accept the place in NUS....
and once they hear you are a poly student, they will not be so willingly to help you, the poly students have to depend on one another.. which is like so little already... it is very sad that Singapore has this kind of system... And I certainly did not think that those 2 schools are top schools or what.. most online gamers in the North America don't even know what is Singapore... but yet they did hear about one of the overseas unis I intend to go... even though there is supposed to be a worse uni compared to NUS...
so the best way is to leave Singapore and start a new life elsewhere.. don't let your kids suffer like we do.. it is horrible... -

I think klutzgal shd just stop whining. If you can't get in to the university with your own merit, thats not the poly students' problem of them gaining entry to the university but yours.
What makes you think just because lesser poly students entry is going to help you gain entry into the university? fymk was right. If you think it's so difficult and you can't compete for a place in the university because you are goin to be competing with top JC students and extra competition from the poly students, why bother in the first place? -
well first of all, i am not whining.....the main reason i wrote in was not to create a stir btw poly and jc students...i agree that it is difficult to do well in poly too...i have frens who dun think they can even make it into the local unis...and dun have much money to go overseas...and these were students who could have made it to jcs...
well...i feel that another uni wil help solve the problem of jc and poly students.or at least provide some more happiness...and relief..
what i would like to say is that poly students like the person who wrote in to the forum about jc students getting automatic entry into unis...what nonsense should get their facts rite and be happy about the govt making these new changes to yr lives and further complicating the entire jc system... -

First you complain about competing with RJC and NJC people.
You have to understand there are always people better than you and it is up to you to see if you can challenge yourself to do better
Second you complain about the guy who alleged that there was automatic entry for jc students
well Ok , he should have get his facts right - fine ..this point I can agree on. You have to think he is probably in the same situation as some of your jc friends...prolly he doesn't have to money to go overseas too. That resulted in that letter of frustration. It doesn't bode well on him if he didn't get his facts right. Let's all get over that and move on.

Think long and hard my dear. Hypothetically let's name that 4th university Noname Uni. Now if you are an employer and you are looking at a couple of candidates : what do you see?
Oxford University VS Noname Uni
Harvard University VS Noname Uni
Princeton University Vs Noname Uni
University of London Vs Noname Uni
National University of Singapore VS Noname Uni
Nanyang Technological University VS Noname Uni
University of Melbourne VS Noname Uni
London Imperial College VS Noname Uni
University of New South Wales VS Noname Uni
Now who would you employ if some are asking for the same starting pay and assuming all of them are nice.

Why would you think it will give you or any others relief? From what my dad says, if an NUS grad comes to you asking for the same salary as with another grad from a noname university - u take the NUS grad. Why choose a non designer shoe when you can have a gucci/prada whichever? You see ,it is rather naive to think a 4th university will really help you. Most people I know want places in NUS and NTU increased. Why? Because they are established and have some form of academic reputation. People know NUS for medicine and law internationally while NTU is recognised well locally
No offence meant but a 4th university is impractical and totally illogical. If you are that desperate for a degree , you might as well get an external degree from London University (they offer distance) and London degrees are acceptable overseas . Do well in the degree and maybe save enough to do an actual on campus post grad program in a prestigious university. -
As compared to other countries..we really only have a few unis and it's really competitive.
But then I think, given the opportunity and if financial situation approves, then perhaps more would prefer to study overseas.

Not only that , the job market in Singapore is also very competitive. There are some NUS/NTU grads who cannot even find jobs and resulted in working as a clerk etc.
So Klutzgal , if you want a place in university , compete for it. Don't just think an extra university will help you get a degree. It won't help you at all when the 4th uni is not recognised.
And besides don't look down on where you are studying. My sis is in one of Monash's external campuses and she says there are some jc students from good jcs , who are struggling in the degree . Everything is a challenge . Good Degrees are not easy to come by and you will always have to compete against someone better.
When you go to university , you will find out even marks affect your degree in the job market. Unis have rankings 1st class hons, 2nd class(upper and lower) and there are people who have obtained prizes from exceling in certain subjects which they will hammer down in their resumes .
All I can say . Don't worry about university yet. I presume , you haven't even done your A levels. Just focus on your weakpoints and try to strengthen them. -
