  actually, it is quite true; personally at least...

  my late uncle who taught me guitar riffs and stuff got admitted to a mental institution in his mid-30s after a bout of depression and drug abuse. he free-lanced as a session guitarist. never really had a full time job and is basically a free spirit. when he came out, he couldn't hold on a regular job. he ended up not cutting his hair and smoked himself to death with liver failure at 40.

  i felt partly guilty at that time becos i used to `sneaked' him ciggies when no one in the family is looking.

  i still have his guitar, here sitting in my study room. but i hardly touch the guitar anymore....

  ..........except recently when i picked up the guitar hero III just to pass time late at night when the kids are asleep.
