Heavy Metal spawned out of Rock and leaves no link between both genres.
Heavy Metal = Everything after Black Sabbath, so to say.

Btw, this is a very debated topic on some Heavy Metal websites, sometimes there no wrong or no right... For referance, Metal Archives is good, if the band is not there... its not Heavy Metal enough.</sup>
