Some of the 0405s are also found at KJDEP. I'm one of those who luv the wail. It's very...unique.Originally posted by TIB1186Z:The wailing sound is the hub reduction, and its quite high pitch and very audible. Quite irritating when one wants to sleepBut there are some peeps in this forum who luv this wailing sound, or hub reduction. The volgrens dun appear to have any by virtue of their mysteriously loud-sounding engine as compared to the others.
FYI, SBS 161 U has a change in exhaust pipe. Hence it might sound a little similar to the SMRTB O.405. It used to be an ex-105, but now a permanent Sv 63.Originally posted by iveco:This is slightly off topic, but do SMRT Mercs use the same engine as their SBST counterparts? And why does SBS161U (ex-105) have a strange sound? It sounds more like an SMRT bus.
Yeah, heard the wailing on mb0405 NR6.Originally posted by SBS9845X:I have noticed that in some or even most of the OAC hispano 0405s, there is this very sickening wailing sound at the last gear of the engine. Whenever the bus accelerates to the last gear and starts cruising, the wailing is like, well, so irritating. A minority of the OAC 0405s and ALL of the CAC 0405s have no such sound. Also, the volgren ones dont have the wailing engine. Why is this so. I think most of the wailing 0405s are in SMRT AMDEP, as 851,852,854,171,167 have wailing 0405s. I really hate the wailing.
Sometimes, gears in buses, esp the Mercedes Benz O.405 of SBST, can get stuck due to some reasons. The gearbox might have been fixed, or just a matter of 'restarting' the bus.Originally posted by SBS3624G:Er, a little off topic.
mb0405 3816U on 88 got no gear change like that, pick-up worse than mkIII. But, when I got down at my stop, I listened again and hell, it was sth i have never heard of. But, hey, i enjoyed my ride, dun have those violent changing gear jerks.
Hmmmm, make sense. The bus had trouble picking up, so it was probably stuck in the second gear as it could still go fast.Originally posted by SBS9816E:Sometimes, gears in buses, esp the Mercedes Benz O.405 of SBST, can get stuck due to some reasons. heavy vehicles like buses and trucks have hub reduction to help them increase the torque (rotational force) applied to the individual wheels so as to increase performance. note that tis is a common feature found on most modern heavy-duty vehicles.Originally posted by SBS9845X:What is hub reduction anyway?
