Improvements to Orchard Road Bus Services

How can bus services to Orchard Road be improved?
As one of Singapore's prime stretch of real estate, it suffers from constant traffic jams especially on weekends and public holidays. ERP has not lessened the number of cars, taxis that compete with public buses for road space.
Are bus services to Orchard Road well-utilized? Are the bus routes well-planned? What areas of improvements can you think of?
Some bus services which serve Orchard/Scotts Road:

Suggestions for improvements/opinions:
Which bus routes can be further improved?
Which bus routes should be amended? Are they too long?

Not a problem to those who come to Orchard Rd very often. Those people who seldom come to Orchard Rd might get confused or lose their way.Are there too many or too few bus services serving Orchard Road?
Quite ok, Orchard Rd too congested during Xmas and NY period.Should some bus services use only double deckers?

No, Hougang Ave 8 does not have a direct bus to Orchard Rd, due to NEL.
Pasir Ris also no bus to Orchard Rd ( Is 518 operating for the whole day? )What are your experiences taking the bus to/from Orchard Road?
Centrepoint bus stop should be common bus stop for all buses, but it will be prone to congestion. -

Why must Hougang Ave 8 have a direct bus to Orchard Rd...there are other places without buses to Orchard Rd...Sengkang, Punggol, Serangoon, Hougang due to NEL...so watz so special abt Hg Ave 8 to warrant a bus svc to Orchard... -

LTA did a major study sometime back to improve the congestion problem. But.. sigh...
I think the biggest improvement that shd be done is to move all bus stops to the right of Orchard Road, similar to the bus stop arrangement outside Orchard MRT along Orchard Blvd.
Most congestion is caused by cars turning left into the 2 CTE entrances, as well as into shopping centres like PS. Buses need to filter right to get pass, resulting in the centre lanes slowing down.
Whether there is sufficient space on the right of Orchard Road is highly subjective. I think there is.
For example, I am sure Ngee Ann city won't mind sacrificing some of the open space in front of their complex to make a bus bay. There are URA carparks on both sides of Specialist Shopping Centre to accomodate a bus bay, same for the green space opposite Meridien. Even the space above Dhoby Ghaut MRT is available.
Also.. bus lanes should be applied 24 hours along Orchard Road, since the regular Bus Lane hours do not match the peak hours at Orchard Road. -

77,106,7 all serves different parts of Holland Rd, 77 turns right to Sixth Ave, 7 turns left to Clementi Rd, 106 turns left to Holland Ave. The 1st & 2nd stop of Holland Rd is mostly forest(old CMPB) few passengers, it's only the stop before & after the Holland Rd/Farrer Rd junction than are there passengers.
Express 518 first & last bus from Pasir Ris Int is 0600 & 2200hrs respectively.[wkend/PH is 0700 & 2200 hrs] -
Buses now have a new menace in the form of the bs os Plaza Singapura. Many a time, i have seen cars HOGGING the bus lane so that they can use the 'slip rd' to get to PS car park causing lotsa distress to the services using the bs. Some BCs have resorted to letting their passengers alight at the outer lane as they can't maneuver into the bus bay

my number one grouse is bus 16. since it no longer terminates at changi airport pt, is it possible for the service to use DDs?
i have not taken the bus right to the end, and am unfamiliar with the terminal there.
i do not think the roads are too narrow for DDs with the route it plys.
there is always difficulty boarding the bus from orchard road, since it brings passengers to the east quickly, compared to say 14 or 7. -
There is still the matter of the height limit at the National Stadium, which only lets vehicles lower than 3.3m in height pass. So unless svc16 avoids the Stadium area altogether DDs on 16 will just be a dream

Perhaps it won't be a dream afterall. The 30-year old National Studium is scehduled to be torn down and replaced with a new building, "Sports Hub." Construction is expected to begin in 2005 and end by 2009. Spectator capacity will be increased to between 45,000 to 55,000.
Maybe there won't be a height limit gantry then? Or maybe the route of 16 will be changed then?

I agree with you, in my point of view, PJ_Quek was merely pointing out (Hougang Ave 8 ) is one of the affected areas that does not have direct linkage to Orchard area after the NEL Rationalisation, which i believe he didnt voice out anything wrong. SMRT 77, 106 and SBST 7, 502 though duplicate much route along Holland Road, served different sections in the West.
I stayed in Holland Ave, and there is only a SMRT 106 fetches me to Orchard Road. Luckily my returned trip allows me to take either of the 5 (+SBST 111) services.
I had noticed a significantly dropped in frequency in SMRT 106, perhaps due to the frequent jams along Orchard and Suntec.
Staggered stops along Orchard Roads for the above services, all buses should make an earlier turn at Orchard Turn (and forgo the bus stops at Cineleisure), that would result in lesser jams there. -
The stretch of Orchard Turn leading from Somerset Rd to Orchard Blvd is specially meant for buses. I agree HGN Ave 8 has lost all connections to Centrepoint now. 111, IMO, could have been amended to cover the former 512 route along HGN Ave 8/4/9. At least you can still walk out to Ave 2 and take 132 if you are headed for CK Tang's.
On a side note, 132 & 325 duplicate along Upp Serangoon Rd & HGN Ave 2. Maybe 132 should be restored to its former BMR-KVN route. -

Forgo the busstop at Orchard LInk totally. Don't you think that the jams are at the junction between Sometset and Grange road? It was caused by vehicles from grange road clogging the junction by turning right into Somerset Road??? Despite the yellow boxes, the vehicles still clog the junction, thus buses move little despite green light and causes jams along sometset road. Let the buses turn left into Grange Road and that would result in lesser jam. -

I totally agree with ninegrains and gohby. As pj_quek lives in hougang, it is very natural that he will emphasize hg ave 8 and not any other places.
