how come DM3500's are cheaper? the reason lies behind the fact that they were delivered (and registered!) in bulk - they were registered en masse on x'mas day 2001. and the total cost of these 50 DM3500's is jus nice: $9 million.
see the power of bulk purchase? interestingly, most buses of the same type, if identical, tend to get cheaper if u buy more and more. but there are few such exmaples - bus companies will tend to increase cost by retrofitting buses with better equipment and adding other chassis components to fine-tune the buses to meet their operating requirements, thus this savings is often off-set or even results in more expensive but better buses.
also, i'd like to claify the 50% margin. it's tat between a propotype and subsequent mass purchases. if u see the above example, the savings is only about 5%, though $10k per bus is a lot.

Buses like 1688K (B10BLE) and 2888T (L94UB) are bought for evaluation. Buy one, try first. If OK, then buy more. They are bought off-the-shelf and are not much different to other B10BLE and L94UB chassii.

i always think why the prototype buses sort of look (forgive my words) "wierd". esp the SBS9889U.. other prototype buses looked a bit odd too, like the 1688 and 2888. tho the CNG ones are very nice..
and is SBS9888Y and SBS9810X anmd SBS9800 prototypes? dont see the diff in the last two, just that made n diff places, and 9810 got EDS, while 9800 came out early.
