Automatic Vehicle Monitoring System (AVMS)

in case u have noticed, a new blue console have recently popped up next to the IDFC on many SBST buses. since no one posted tis, i wish to enlighten forumnites on tis system, which is known as the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring System (AVMS). the console itself is known as the "DDU".
the purpose of tis system is essentially to replace timesheets. but dun get me wrong, timesheets are not confirmed to be extinct, but wat it does is something like an e-timesheet. when the bus is ahead of or behind schedule by a preset no. of minutes, the system will beep to inform the driver to adjust his driving speed to match his schedule. a high-pitch annoying beep indicates ahead of schedule (pls slow down); a low-pitch soft beep indicates behind schedule (pls drive faster).
the timesheet stored in the system is automatically updated via WLAN at the interchanges/depots when the drivers start duty and it draws data about the vehicle's current location from IDFC, which is linked up to the GPS system (which is also used by the IDFC).
note that the DDU itself does not communicate with the GPS but relies on the IDFC to supply it with the full details including fare stage, bus stop code, door state (open or closed). it onli communicates via WLAN with the IDFC and to download timesheet details from the starter office.
the system's long-term goal is to provide accurate arrival time of buses at bus stops (can recall the name "SBS OnTime" system?) regardless of traffic conditions.
tis system is expected to be up and running from 3rd quarter, 2005. -

the contract is worth US$19.5mil, with Orbital's share totalling about US$13.0mil and Sanyo taking US$6.5mil.
the aim of the project is to "bring about a fundamental shift in service management, schedule adherence and asset utilization... enable SBS (sic) to deliver service benefits to their customers while improving their operational efficiency for the customer." -

I noticed that on 9638C, whenever someone presses bell, a red square with pattern lights up on driver panel. Can someone enlighten me? The square i on top, left most closest to steering.

1) the air-acutated handbrake is on, or
2) the interlocking brake is on when doors are not properly closed.
there used to be a beep connected to it but it wasn't taken out cos it's quite irritating cos it keeps beeping when the doors are still open.
footbrake lights usually take the colour orange. tis is seen on the dashboard of Merc's and Lance's but not sure about Volvo.
the bus stopping light on the dashboard is a constant red light with a banner-and-stick icon with the letter 'S' on the "banner" for Volvo's, right of the 2 triangle lights. -
The VO3X signalling sounds like water droplets.

I heard the console on 9638C sound a low-pitch toot, BC no reaction. When I got down, I saw another 88 driving like speed demon seconds behind.

About the "DDU", as mentioned by ^tamago^ ...
... It seems there are two colours, versions installed earlier seems to be in cream, while the later versions seems to be in blue ...

Yup, 9! 3 arrived at bus-stop, 4 arrived few seconds later due to traffic light, and 2 others arrived as the 4 waited to disgorge passengers. All these sighted as I waited for traffic light at HG Ave 8.Originally posted by bluezombie10:9 147???

It was sort of mayhem as some drove like bicycles, and some like F1, the gp of 4 eventually blocked the next junction as 2 went on 2nd lane, and tried to slip back to 1st lane, thinking the cars would turn left, while the other 2 waited patiently for 1 SD and 1 DD slipped back, amid honkings from irate drivers. A mkII WA NAC on 74 took advantage of situation and overtook the 2 slow ones, adding to chaos.......
