what we wanted is just a system that enables commuter waiting at busstops knowing when his bus would be arriving, for a start, it could be as simple as a busplate, or having the ETA timings published in the internet. -
Yes, I recently saw this on some CAC MB 0405 TIBS buses. One of the buses display the word "SINGAPORE", but for what ? People know that they are in Singapore, so why display this ? I was wondering that the EDS in the bus may display the time, date, welcome aboard and Bus Stopping, like the 0405 G Long buses. Another one is " WELCOME ABOARD, WE ARE GLAD TO BE OF SERVICE WITH YOU" in scrolling form. This is better. And you should know that the grant not just solely from the bus companies, it came from CDCs, NTUC, labour foundation and the Care Foundation too.
Why spent monies on project having LITTLE relevance? Commuters would not be grateful to SMRT for such project.
Think of projects that commuters really wanted, and not projects that is easily implementable (though redundant).
BTW, how much is spent on this 'display' thingy? -

The LED should be for the display of the next bus stop's location. I saw Svc 966 (Woodlands - Marine Parade) showing this. This is similar to what the public buses in Hong Kong and China are doing. IMHO, this is quite useful but still not very informative (the display I remember seeing was "Opp Blk 503", lacking 503 of which estate), but I believe it's still in beta so the information should improve along the way.
Other signs I saw
"Welcome Abroad SMRT, blah blah" <- repetetive in the whole journey and it gets on my nerves
"SINGAPORE" <- worst of all
"Bus Stopping" flashing -
da welcome aboard and singapore will not be shown when the system is put in place.
The flashing of the bus stopping is becoz the system has not been programmed for the service.... when one press the bell, the bus stopping sign and the name of the bus stop will flash alternatively...
there is no need to put the name of the bus stop on the bus stop plate as the bus will show it....this is much better than sbs... we can see the name of the net bus stop inside the bus...
some of the WDL feeder has it already...try it..
no need to put down SMRT's effort.... -
I hope SBS Transit can follow suit... Use the LED infromation display systen, can sort of enhance the company (SBS Transit)

Personally, ive been to alot of countries.. and.. frankly speaking, i'll prefer the bus service in Singapore.. this is due to the fact that it is consider cheap and that the service level is okay.. But.. regarding the next stop system, i would prefer that they announce it together wif the LED.. it would be a whole lot better...

Not all 966s have their EDS working, i think my EDS still appears as SINGAPORE(not very sure).

i took it and saw that the speaker facing the passengers have not been removed... -
I think it is cool to have them on board,Imagine if the system are working fine then it would be useful for those who are unsure where to alight.

SMRT audio thingy
Saw it again on TIB 613 P (1o6 cameo)
It is still in operation...
The driver puts on this some sort of an earphone/speaker (like the ones used by telephone operators) around his neck and speaks into it.....the wire from the earphone speaker is connected to the loudspeaker...
The driver even put it into good use by demanding passengers at the back to move further into the rear via the speaker...
Today (7/10)
After the driver announce the name of Clementi station in English, he then announced it in Chinese..
But the driver still calls Buona Vista Station as Ghim Moh though... -
I saw it once on 970, however I have not heard anything. I find it kind of stuipd if driver is required to say aloud the bus stop name.
Whether auto or manual, I will probably find the 'sound' more of a nuisance.
I still feel the 'display' thingy something stupid.
It may be slightly useful if the 'display' thingy tells the next stop, and not when it about approaching the bus-stop, and it started to display. -
TIB797S of Service 307 has it's display thing working already

I spotted TIB1033G on Sv190 today with the SMRT Display" Singapore" ting. When someone presses the bell, the display will show" BUS STOPPING" then "SINGAPORE" then "BUS STOPPING" and so on till the door opens, it seems unneeded.

I think they're still deploying the system. Yesterday I took 966, it says Opp Catholic JC, Trellis Towers, Opp Blk ??? at the respective bus stops. Doesnt matter as i will be able to track the buses down. The right sequence should be "Catholic JC, Trellis Towers, Aft blk 195, St Andrew's Jnr Sch, Kolam Ayer Ind Est, opp BLK16"and so on.Originally posted by PhyrePhox:I think they're still deploying the system. i dun think the LED can accomodate long texts such as "St Andrew's Junior School". it should display "St Andrew's Sch". and "Opp Catholic JC" is correct.
