Originally posted by SBS3688Y:I doubt the authorities will be able to enforce the fine on fare evaders effectively. Fare evaders can always choose to:
- alight the bus before the inspector reaches him/her
then the evader will have to board another bus and pay again that is enough as the fine thing was meant to be a deterrant.
- always choose to alight the bus immediately even if caught red-handed by the inspector (instead of paying the fine)
Caught red handed? last i heard the inspectors will be issued warrant cards that enable them to carry out their duties, maybe just maybe have similar powers as a police officer when on board a bus.
- what can the inspector do is the fare evader says he got no money?
if the guy really no money, and his stop not far away maybe can close 1 eye, but depends the guy acting skill good or not, if not take down particulars then send summons.
- even if the inspector insists on taking down his/her NRIC no. and particulars, they can always say they don't have it with them.
Like i said, inspectors got power liao, what happens if a police officer ask for your particulars and you dun give? Similarly, inspectors cam detain you call police and add another offence
And the most funny thing is :
- Fare evaders will be fined $20 if caught for non-payment or underpayment
- Fined $50 for using of concession cards.
I find this really stupid. If you were the fare evader, which would you admit? Of course I'd rather admit non-payment as the fine will be only $20, instead of admitting that I've been abusing the concession pass ($50 fine) right?
This is prob another of the loop holes they need to patch up. But $20 very siong already, imagine 1 day kanna twice = whole month bus fare.
In Melbourne(Australia)(case study) :
A group of about 2-5 inspectors conduct ticket inspections as a group (to "surround the passengers") and fare evaders face a $100 summon (to be paid at the centre). Most of these inspectors look tough and big size, unlike Singapore's inspectors who had to work alone. Australian ticket inspectors can detain the fare evader and even call the police to arrest them if they try to escape or fail to produce their proof of identification. Sometimes, Australian police also conduct ticket inspections on trains!!
Whats new? Didnt you read one of our national soccer players kanna fine dunno how many thousand dollars for unpaid tickets, last warning, dun pay go jail. and not 1 day jail hor.
There is always community service instead of jail time, since nobody was hurt as a result of his offence. Leave the jails for the most dangerous of all criminals.Originally posted by Goondu74:Whats new? If it was up to me. But what if they refused to do com service? There are really such people who prefers to go and sit then pay up u know. To them, it will prob take a year to earn the money, might as well go in sit a few months and get fed by the govt! Come out fitter and healthier.Originally posted by iveco:There is always community service instead of jail time, since nobody was hurt as a result of his offence. so cheapskateOriginally posted by SBS9889U:I just saw a fare cheat on 145 today(An old man). He did not want to pay for his bus trip which was supposed to be rather long and BC refused to move out of Toa Payoh Int till he pays or get down the bus. The BC did not resort to legal action as a woman stood up to pay for his bus fare and asked him to keep the ticket. How incondersirate of him!!!
not only that some times if you not too familiar with you destination you cannot be sure whether your stop is right or not since the view at the sides are blocked and it is very very hard to look throughOriginally posted by phillipC:Tourist-targeted buses should be ad-free

I REFER to the letter, "Can Passengers 'see' through ads on buses?" (Oct 27).
.
I agree with the writer that the ads on buses are taking up a greater proportion of the bus windows. While I applaud the bus operators' efforts to be creative in generating secondary revenue to keep fares low, it can be exasperating to tourists wanting to sight-see using public transport ation.
.
Recently, I took the CityBuzz service C3 to Little India with my friends from overseas who wanted to see the light-up for Deepavali.
.
As it is a bus for tourists, I expected the windows to be "ads-free" to allow a good view of the outside. However, the bus was wrapped with advertisements and passengers sitting near the back rows where the advertisement stickers were pasted could not get a good view of the sights. It certainly did not help that the darkness of the night added to the low visibility.
.
The bus was not crowded then and we could avoid sitting by the panels covered with advertisements. But what if the bus was crowded? I urge the bus operator to look into this matter.
So contradicting, they deployed the best buses for this so called tourist sight seeing buses, yet covered it with all the advertisements...
