(TNP, 4/3/2006)
SBS Transit, a subsidiary of transport giant Comfort DelGro, is expected to call a tender for a real-time bus information system in mid-year.
The company hopes a prototype of a system, which will tell passengers the exact time their bus will arrive, will be ready by early next year.
The system will also let commuters know why a bus is running late and whether it could be caught in a jam during the journey.
SBS Transit and the Land Transport Authority earlier shelved plans for similar systems because of high costs.
But satellite-tracked automated vehicle management systems, of the sort which will form the backbone of the project, are now sophisticated and cost-effected then before. -
this is good
as long as dun use this as excuse to say must raise fare -
they can implement this with 3G and a web server, and charge as a monthly VAS. they already have this info all displayed on OCC computers, where each bus is and stuff.

I am wondering whether the USERS of the bus service need this INFORMATION.
This information will tell u how long u have to wait.
You cannot do anything but wait, unless it is like 20 mins and you can drink a cup of coffee.
Or it is just some fancy and expensive idea thought out by people who dun take the public transport but have to implement some stupid plan to impress his boss.

I think another issue for them is to replace the old lousy buses like SBS'T scanias and SMRT's nissan diesels . SBST's scanias are not so bad as the Nissan's but they are not comfortable for long distance routes, tried a few times and I avoid them especially the clear glass's scanias. There are two types right but same engine if I am not wrong ?
Nissan diesel is another story, the bus is super slow , lousy air con and suspension . I often take 178 and it seems they are getting more converted air con buses on the svc . These buses needs to be replaced .
Hopefully they purchase new low floor buses. I seen some poor old folks struggling to board the bus ( because of the steps ) . It's time for them to upgrade the fleet. -

This real time bus arrival information system is running hand in hand with the AVMS. Growth Venture (a subsidiary of Singapore Technologies) and LECIP Technologies were offered the tender to provde installation of the AVMS system in February this year. 4 temp staffs were employed by SBS Transit in Mid March 2006 to carry out AVMS readiness checks on all 2700 SBST buses, currently, Growth Venture is carrying out rectification works to AVMS systems with problems identified. The AVMS system is expected to be ready by May 2006.
The AVMS system, otherwise known as Automatic Vehicle Management System is a full fledge fleet management system which allows the SBST HQ to monitor bus deployment and unforeseen road conditions. When Bus Captains meets any emergencies or faces any troubles on the road, the AVMS systems doubles up as an Emergency Communication System for the BCs to directly communicate with the HQ. The AVMS system is running on GPRS technology instead of the latest 3G technology due to cost constraints.
The Real Time Bus Arrival Information System tender is set to be open after the AVMS system is ready for use. Currently, extensive usability test is carried out on service 88.

Also, if you were late, n ur waiting for the bus, you will get panicky if you dont know what time the bus will arrive...
From whatever comments you made, i can infer that you don't encounter this problem before coz you dont really travel around much.... -
Please read my comments CAREFULLY.
The timing for the arrival of the MRT can be monitored consistenly as there is no traffic JAM.
The timing for the arrival of the bus may not be so accurate due to the peak timing traffic and passengers moving to the back of a packed bus.
When you take a bus journey from point A to point B, you will choose the bus route with the least timing.
If your designated bus is delayed, taking a alternate bus route will lead to more delays.
As the timing of the arrival will change all the way, I dun see how it can help you in any decision making unless you are taking a cab.
Indicating the arrival time of the bus is NOT solving the basic problems on the bus frequency or Long waiting time. (Complaint - Long waiting time)
It will incur additional unneceassary cost on the purse string of the passengers.
It does not improve any quality about the bus service but just another white elephant.
It will also cost unnessessary stress on the bus drivers to be able to reach the bus stop at designated time.
To infer that I dun travel around can only indicated the narrow-minded of some individual. -

3 times failure still want to try. waste billion already lor.
they could have got it right the first tiem round in 2000 and we all happily stare at digi displays at all bus stops saying... 147 15 mins next bus SBS9431G

if u all can remember, there is a bus stop along Orchard Boulevard, the one which 124,143,167,190 etc once served, the one which ppl need to board on the other side of the lane, just before the buses turn right to Scotts Rd..
it ever had a bus arrival information board, real time also..
and, along AMk ave 3, MRt station (the one next to the MRT) it once had a board by LTA mentioning some real time bus arrival time info coming up, but long gone -

I admit that I am not a bus enthusiasts.
I dun test out the real timing of the bus route to my destination every time to determine Plan B if Plan A dun make it before I take a bus.
I understand that for one of you, it can be a information that you can be proud about.
Too bad I dun really have the extra time and money to do that.
I stand by the comments that the timing will varies according to the traffic so taking a so-called alternate route will NOT helped.
Every one will take the bus route with the shortest timing required.
Unless you catergorised your trip through slow, fast & faster, and you always choose the fast plan and using the faster plan as backup.

The approximated departure timings in Ints are +/- 5 mins on the time shown, can the real time bus info be accurate with +/- 2 mins tolerance???

daily, i take a bus from ang mo kio to buona vista.
theres 74 direct and 74 need to go to bt timah and dover to reach buona vista. this takes 1 hour
theres an alternative. take 165 till holland village and walk or transfer 200. but 165 uses upp thomson rd..
so, in the above scenario, taking 165 for me isnt a good alrernative because the final travelling time may not be that attractive more than a direct 74..
but 165 guarantees seats, unlike 74! -

Some drivers, start to walk to their bus before the timing on the timesheet.
Some drivers start to walk to their bus at that time.
Some drivers walk to the bus according to the TV timing (1min later for berth, 2 min for parking)
Some drivers start walking to their bus after the time stated...
