SMRT sv 178

This SMRT bus service is one of the most blacklisted SMRT services in Singapore, always full of Nissan U31 buses, especially when sv920 and 921 revert back to its originals.
Any regulars of this service or WL residents may post their comments here, thanks

The frequency is hopeless... up to 20min peak hour (leaving BNL)... Or even more if there's a jam...

i always see the bus empty (KOSONG) at woodlands customs, and its always a kosong nissan

The air-conditioners function only as ventilators on those buses, which are supposedly air-conditioned. And A$$MRT, in their never relenting pursuit to make more money and profits, charges air-con fare for those buses. This is to also protect their image, you know (THE FIRST BUS COMPANY IN SINGAPORE TO HAVE FULL AIR-CON FLEET! Yeah right...). -
At least the SBS CAC buses are better quality... Windows replaced, interiors refurbrished.... The best CAC A/Cs are either Sutrak and those on the mercs, which are have round corners, 3 vents on each side and 5 fans on top lined up straight (Webasto?).

anywae, i ride 178 most of the time since it pass by my hse...
hmmm, ridership is definitely not that good...
178 seems to have many rivals on its route..
towards JE - 66, 176, 506
towards BNL - 157, 174
towards WDL - 187, 963
well, im just speakin from my daily experience...i usually take the alternate services mentioned above as the frequency for 178 is like 20 to 25 mins...
its really a hopeless service, yet, at times useful.
Useful cos some Marsiling residents depends on it to travel to and fro to WDL Int...
Way before the WDL MRT Line, this bus was always crowded...if there were bendies back then, i feel 178 could have gotten them... but not for the current situation now...
i once wrote in to SMRT requestin them to enhance 178's route... maybe ply Yew Tee...
but they replied sayin there is not a need for Yew Tee residents to get another bus service.. -
Yeah, some SBS buses has bad A/C... But it's a small no. out of a specific model... But for CAC Nissans, all have bad A/C... Same for CAC Scanias... At least the SBST a/cs are much better.
The SMRT a/cs either are hot-cons or leak BADLY.
For SBST leaking a/cs I only hear of ARBP MK III leaking.
For SMRT literally any bus can have leaking a/c if not maintained well. Nissans, they're simply not sauna, but hot water bath. Hotter. And more rickety. I would prefer a DM CAC Merc or CAC Scania.

And especially on WA Scanias, many bolts are missing from the A/C panel... You can see they used masking tape to cover the holes, but in the end, the tape gets soaked by water and leak anyway. Sometimes, you see passengers stick tissue paper into the holes... -

189 used to have habits way back in the past during the handover...
then they disappeared for around four years...
and now, a habit is back on 189! wee...saw TIB 1177 A on it todae (7pm).... super crowded!!... then, after that, double 12m 0405s came...oso crowded.. -

History of SMRT 178:-
I still remember that this bus service was one of the 3 Tibs services (other than 855 and 925) that was converted to fully aircon service in early 1997. It was using the CAC Hinos at that time. However it was converted back to a partial aircon service in 1999 by the newly opened WL depot due to the deployment problems by then.
Between yr 2001 to 2004 I also remember that there were a number of Nissan OAC cameos on a number of WL services including 178.
In yr 2004, I also gotta feeling that this service was somehow further "downgraded" ever since the introduction of service 950. It was when some of the the Scanias (TIB645Y, TIB647S, TIB649L just to name a few) were transferred to other services like 167 to make up for the MB0405s that were transferred to the new 950. As for service 178 it was replaced by the ex-css buses (TIB1248D etc). These ex-css buses at that time just joined in the SMRT fleet
Especially since when the Bt Panjang feeders revert back to their originals, service 178 seemed to have increased in the number of Nissan UDs (some originals, some cameos)
I think that service 178 is seemed to be "biased" by the WL all this while since WL started operations -
Well, can't be blamed. Not forgetting there's Service 187 from woodlands to boon lay as well. Same service. Anyway, those Nissan buses are good. It's vintage. We don;t get to travel around and enjoy the engines of such buses. I miss the DAF CACs as well. And regarding their aircon, i think it;s such cooler and quieter than some MB0405s which are ill-maintained. It;s time to grab a ride on those buses before they get sent to the scrapyard.

well sv178 also passes by my house and its frequency as I know it, kinda sucks. Sry sv178 I can't help u there.
