Depends on how the BC brake, the type of road surface(wet/dry...), the condition of traffics in front of the bus...

I know how difficult it is to master smooth braking.
I ride a bike, and I always try to brake from a considerable distance, and be sure to do it uniformly, but it is really difficult to judge, because this obviously need experience, which I don't have.
Imagine the difficulty in braking smoothly for a motorcycle: now try to do the same with a bus. There really are very few who can master this art... -
i can brake smoothly on my bicycle. Those ppl who complain hard braking are just bragging too much.

Please do not compare braking systems of different vehicles as one thing. 2 wheeled vehicles do not have problems of unbalanced braking compared to axled vehicles.
Our latest buses run on front disc and rear drums. To brake efficiently, the driver relies on the bus heavily. If the workshop failed to do up the buses properly, can land the driver in deep shit. Of course, if any accidents take place, everyone in the line of fire will get part of the bullet.
Brake linings, air leakage from H/brake valve, footbrake valve, quick release valve, brake booster efficiency, foot brake lever calibration contribute to lousy braking. And contamination of air system can also lead to air leakage.
A bus carries a massive weight and thus braking it requires both technical and driver's skills. In 2 wheeled vehicles, there is no such thing as brake imbalanced. In axled vehicles, if the brakes are imbalanced, the vehicle will swing either side when braking. Sometimes as serious as to hit the vehicle in the next lane. (That's why all my personal vehicles I insists on disc brakes, lower chances of unbalanced braking and easier maintenance; lesser headaches) Being much lighter, bicycles and motorcycles requires much lesser braking force. But for a bus it means much more than that. -

actually, no matter how hard the bus brake, also is better than a smaller vehicle like a car brake.
same force, but a person in a car will experience more "hard braking" than another person on a bus..
also, a car picks up speed/ slows down much faster than a bus or lorry, so even when the bus driver brake very late, passengers usually wont experience much "hard braking" effect, or inertia. this, applies to sitting passengers of course..
nobody mentioned engine brake le

Yes i've experienced emergency brake before. Bus FULL and i'm on it scania n113 svc17 . Bus emergency brake near tampines central (the CC area there) medium traffic density in the afternoon. Braked because one car infront of the bus suddenly braked to drop off a passenger. Nobody fell;only swayed and lots of murmuring can be heard. lol. i was sitting down and was half-awake becasue i took the bus from bedok. -
I just took 9238Z and the bus locked wheels several times, considered normal.

i've made a list of tips on how to prevent yourself from falling down when the bus brakes.
1)Always hold on to the poles or the seats at all times when you're standing especially when the bus is full;obviously the poles are placed there for a purpose.
2)If you are weak or carrying things that are heavy, i suggest you wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before you alight.
3)Don't stand on the steps especially on the Double decks or stand at the upper deck.
4)Want to SMS,MMS or play what hand-held game devices, get a seat first.
5)The most important point: Do not stand when the bus is moving if you're on a coach espeially interstate coaches because if he jams the brakes brakes you'll 'fly'
City buses average hightest is 60kmh but interstate coaches can be up to 100kmh. -
I experienced a near emergency braking last year, on 178, TIB846J which is a Scania 113 EABO. The bus was approaching Bukit Panjang when a van (GN2155S) tried to squeeze in between a car on the right lane and the bus that i was on, which was on the left lane. The BC had his foot hard on the brake and with one hand turning the steering wheel to the left, his right hand was half way to grab the handbrake. Impressive performance, and the van managed to squeeze through in a two lane road! Nearly did i witness a moving deployment of the handbrake. The bus slowed from about 40kph to 15kph in something like 1.5sec, and not to think that i was sitting behind the driver's seat.

Among all the buses, SBST's scanias have the worst brakings. I take svc 33's scanias everyday and I know. Usually when the bus starts slowing down, the bus will start jerking , jerk quite bad until the bus comes to a full stop. At first I thought could it be the driver's braking but I realize every scania ride , I have this problem.The feeling will be worse if the driver brakes hard. Horrible bus, I still dont understand why SBST don't quickly replace this mediocue bus.

Scania brake lining (ferrdo, if i'm not wrong) usually cause this problem. Manufacturer is looking into it. Or switching to another brand. Bus overall no problem. -
