I dont think SBST will make it serve Toa Payoh Lor 6 , but there might be chance. 1 thing that is not good when it serve Toa Payoh Lor 6 is that it will duplicate with 88 & in the end 88 might be amended due to this coz 88 takes 1h to run from Toa Payoh - Pasir Ris , but this new svcs will only need 20-25mins to get from Toa Payoh Lor 6 - Pasir Ris! Well... It was mentioned in another post that in order for new "expressway" services to be approved, the company needs to make the service pass through 2 of its own territories before the service enters a competitor's territory. Also, the service has to originate from an interchange within the company's own territory. Examples include 168 (SBST's territory: Bedok & Tampines), 161 (SBST's territory: Hougang & Sengkang), 965 & 969 (SMRT's territory: Woodlands & Yishun). One rare exception is 966 (dunno why SMRT never make 966 pass through Bukit Panjang)...
So the suggested 175 may not be feasible for SMRT... (Boon Lay and Sengkang both belong to SBST...) The suggested 164 may work though, since it serves Hougang and Sengkang. But the number "164" itself is not really that appealing... since "164" sounds like "die all the way" in Cantonese... ("168" is a good number as it sounds like "prosper all the way". But the number "168" is already taken.) -
i dun think theres such a rule... its purely common sense... bus companies can plan any route they want.

ya. but sometimes when there isn't any direct bus linking (eg. BB-Tampines) people might not go coz it takes too much time by MRT , but once there is such direct bus , they might go. I'm in support of 966 going through Bukit Panjang. At least we'll have a bus that goes to the east.

anyway, this suggestion is just plain fantasy -
Your fantasy 175 & 138 may only become a reality if SBST and SMRT merge together....
If SMRT extends 175 to Sengkang, SBST will scream. (And SBST is unlikely to let SMRT park its buses in Sengkang Int, just like 965 which loops at Sengkang.)
If SBST extends 138, SMRT will scream. (SMRT will probably tell you to take 171 from Mandai to Bukit Panjang, and take 176 to Bukit Batok & Jurong East.)
Or you can pray that SBST and SMRT sign agreement and introduce "joint services", just like Hong Kong's "Tunnel bus services" where a bus route is jointly run by 2 companies. (The buses of the 2 companies come in an alternate pattern, and the profits generated from the route are split equally into 2.) But given the history, the nature, and the politics of Singapore's transportation, such a "joint service" is unlikely... -
