merger better. singapore market too small for competition.
reckon past competition failed because of the market size.
eg 134 vs 851
- less n less scheme B
- no more CSS like that
monopolist shd be control by govt
routes to be decided by public n SBS not PTC.

Merging is ok, provided the LTA will allow some private companies operate more niche services.

say this west point bus co got low floor scanias..perhps they might just purchase some WAb scanias in thier fleet renewl soon...

i feel that SMRT should run only trains and sbst stick to buses.. but that wont happen i guess... even though i feels is better.. just like old times

I think the situation will get worst. Mergers often = cut cost + cut workforce.
I think service standards will drop in most cases.
BUs routes with 70% similarity will be axed. Hmmm bad idea.
With merger they will say cost has increased (yeah right) and then still apply for higher fares. -
a merger has more benefits than downfalls...
mergers will eliminates all unnecessary costs, first of which, simply is parallel bus routes or long duplication. second is expertise, planning and better usage of facilities.
about competition, singapore is too small for two bus companies, not forgetting the word "competitors" is just in name only.
on the rail side, SMRT can use its experience in managing the NEL..
if both merge, they can share bnoth rail and bus knowledge.
look at SPH and mediacorp.. both were "bleeding" and the merger, lthough cut jobs, is the better for them and the public
