Police say assaults on bus drivers will not be tolerated
SINGAPORE: Singapore police say they take all cases of assault on bus drivers seriously and will take firm action against assailants.
14 such cases were reported last year and 18 so far this year.
Police investigations were initiated in all cases, except when the drivers themselves did not want to pursue the matter.
Those prosecuted will be charged with voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, they can be jailed up to a year and fined a maximum of S$1,000.
In a statement, responding to media queries, the police say they share the view that bus drivers should not be intimidated or have their safety compromised in the course of their work.
Acts of hooliganism would also not be condoned.
They urge the public to continue to report such incidents.
The most recent occurred on 6 June, when a bus driver was punched after he refused to hold up the service for a commuter to finish smoking his cigarette. - CNA/yy -
