A great preasure for BCs doing svc 902 during peak hours when it is handed over to SBST. But if they merge/buses = SBST and trains = SMRT, then shouldn't be a problem for 902 though. -

I think SMRT management should really try taking their buses and trains and tell Singaporeans how they feel.
Now we have a CEO in charge of a large transportation company, that adds insult to commoners taking public transport in the press.
With the hikes every year, public transportation will become an issue alongside healthcare and other main citizen concerns in the next election. The difference is KBW is doing rather well for his Health Ministry, we don't see the same for Transport. What is MOT doing when CDG had to submit a paper to alert them of such cost concerns? Patting mosquitoes in their offices?
Time to decide for the CEO's and MOT's 'valuable' foresight and management in the next election. -

one of the ways is to further liberalise and open up the public transport market and disregard whether is there "any duplication of services". Let the free markert be free vs pax demand. and give more leeway to public transport operators to introduce new routes.
As for duplication of svs, it's high time that it should be allowed. I believe the MRT has already reached its saturation pt, and maybe sooner or later SMRT might impose a 10c - 20c peak hour surcharge

Well I dont know if we should blame SMRT for the standards they give vis-a-vis SBST.
No comments for the MRT where its rather straight forward - longer frequency = more pax per train = more profits per train = more trains in depot = save on driver costs. Apparently they find keeping the train in the depot and cutting the driver more profitable than putting more trains to induce commuters to take the train.
SMRT currently faces problems in its bus side (cant be bothered if there's any in the MRT Taxis side). First of all the driver's basic pay is lower than SBST. So more prospective employees would join SBST instead. This causes a shortage of manpower to drive the buses.
Secondly, due to manpower shortage means some buses may not run certain trips, especially in the morning when drivers report to work.
Thirdly, ALSO due to manpower shortage and little buses means tight running time for the services. Means drivers running like crazy and facing fatigue everyday. Imagine 61 67 858 965 966.
They got a small bus fleet and a smaller spare bus fleet. With them not buying new buses for the past few years means no new services anytime soon unless they take the Nissans from 608 and put them on some new route. Means no direct connections to Kranji Camp la, Bt Panjang to Sengkang la...
As for SBST to sell bendies if they take over SMRTB, compare the cost of selling them (as well as the no of years left running here) VS the cost of buying new buses and take which one is more profitable.
As for Dart on 922, B9 on 960, VO on 188.... firstly you need to train the drivers to drive them. For the moment if they merge the bus ops the BCs will stick to their buses and gradually they will learn other models. This is of course if Depot Transfer occurs.
Improvements to be made? yah SMRT has a LONG way to improve... improve your staff costs first and recruit more drivers first. Then we talk about service availability, then talk about running time, then talk about better service.
For your info, due to the delay of the opening of NEL, SBST has asked for compensation of the LTA for a sum of $50k / $500k (Refer to Extraordinary Items in the Income Statement FY03). -

S'pore rail operator SMRT sees no need for merger-paper
State-controlled rail operator SMRT Corp chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa shot down calls to restructure local public transport, a report in the Today newspaper said on Wednesday.
The paper quoted Saw as saying that the public transport system was already "very good" and that she saw no need for a merger with bus and taxi operator ComfortDelgro .
"Why fix something that ain't broke," the paper quoted Saw as saying at the group's 2006 results briefing.
SMRT shares, which touched a record high on Monday of S$1.88 on takeover speculation, was down 2.66 percent on Wednesday morning to S$1.83. ComfortDelgro shares also fell 2.92 percent to S$2.33.
Last week, ComfortDelgro chairman Lim Jit Poh made two proposals to the Transport Ministry on restructuring public transport as part of the government's review of land transport.
SMRT, 54.6 percent owned by state holding company Temasek Holdings [TEM.UL], reported a 31 percent rise in net profit to S$135.8 million ($89.75 million) in 2006. -

They only made an tender for 66 New buses.. Whether they decide to buy the buses or not.. It's another thing. And i don't see the need why SMRT have to do an "Update".
